108 mph ain't fast enough for you? Get an aftermarket chip and replace the
stock one, but take it to the track dude, the streets are no place to play

His particular situation is unnecessary, but if I was in a hurry (to
get to the hospital for instance), fast would be good. My '94 Sunbird
is limited around the same area, but right up to 100 mph it rides like
a dream, not at all difficult to control. I only take it there when
there is no traffic around and weather is clear, but I think in
emergencies limiters suck.
Just my 2 cents

There is another reason they put the limiting and it is related to the speed
rating of the tires. That reason is called Trial Lawyers.

Ummmm. Maybe because it's American. Wouldn't it start to fly apart at anything
over 105? Just curious.

Do share what you drive to work Lee. I'm just dying here picturing you in a

Depends on the weather and my mood. I have three:
1) 1989 Trans Am GTA
2) 1995 Grand Am SE
3) 2000 Bonneville SSEi
No Sunfires, Civics, or any other car in the "I can't afford a REAL sports
car" class. I use the GTA for fun, the SSEi for luxury, and the Grand Am
when I'm sick of paying 93 octane prices.

On the Fiero newsgroup, we just (finally) finished a debate about people
traveling at higher speeds than are allowed. Some said it was only their
business, while most others thought it was the business of everyone on the
road. I agree. I don't want crazy people risking my life for me. I do a good
enough job of it myself. Most of the speed limiters are set more than high
enough for safe driving within the confines of that particular car. For example,
I would feel much safer traveling at 140 mph in a Corvette than a Sprint.
Manufacturers design cars to be able to take a certain speed, so they limit
it to that speed. Another example: The Fiero is somewhat stable at high speeds,
but the suspension is taken out of lower end GM cars like the Chevette.
Also, the headlight doors tend to rip off when you get it over 150 or 160 miles
(roughly). Obviously, GM didn't design the car to be driven that fast. Obviously
they didn't think any crazy people were going to stuff small blocks in them :)
Probably best to stick with the factory governor. I think they knew what they
were doing when they put it in. Unless you've completely modified your car and had
it inspected for safety at high speed, like high rated tires, four-point harness,
four-piston calipers, race pads ect...
As Dennis Leary says:
Of course that's just my opinion yaddy yaddy yadda..

The only worth car of the lot is the Bonneville, although I'd personally leave
such cars to middle aged businessmen myself. The other two are destined to be
candle-holders. While you may not consider the SiR to be anything sporty, it
outperforms two of your three hands down, and god only knows will have better
reliability and resale value than all three.
Don't get me wrong, my girlfriend drives a Pontiac and many of my friends do
as well. I'm just not of the American motors mindset. I'm surfing this group
more for Sunfire related problems as my girlfriend's is turning out to be a
real lemon...

No one should have to be going more than a resonable speed over the limit.
While I'd be the first to admit my heavy foot, I believe that speed governers
are a real need these days. Technology is allowing smaller cars to be even
faster than ever before. If your car is limited to a given speed, then so be
it. Racing is for the track, not the highway.
BluCivicSiR

Blu's right on this one. When I started driving in the mid-70's you
constantly heard driver's saying they were going to "take it out on the
highway and see what she'll do". The last thing we need on our four lanes at
10:00 PM is little Johnny in Dad's Bonneville/Taurus/Camry seeing if he can
peg the speedo. These days, Johnny doesn't have to do this anymore, he just
has to be able to read.

Blu,
I'm interested to know the second car you figure your Si will beat. The
Grand Am is a gimme, but the Bonneville pushing 280 ft. lbs. of torque is
only 13 lbs of weight per ft. lb. The GTA is around 11 lbs. so I suppose you
concede that one. What is the Civic's ratio? I'm assuming your car is
unmodified as far as engine internals. If it's not, we're not talking about
a true Honda anymore.
Interested,

First of all let's get something clear here. I'm not out trashing Pontiacs
here. Suddenly, because I'm driving a Civic I'm automatically considered to be
doing so. The Sunfire is a big piece of shit. Period. Surprise surprise but
I'm more than entitled to my opinion. I've driven them..and they are nowhere
near Jap reliability or performance. Period.
As for your apparent concept of my Civic...you're falling deep into the nasty
world of generalization. It's not lowered, it's not wearing a body kit, it
doesn't have a lawmower muffler, nor any other aftermarket muffler for that
matter. What it does do is 0-60 in low sevens, and tops out at 140mph which is
more than enough to suite my needs quite nicely.
One final note on the subject. If the T/A was such a great ride..it wouldn't
be in one of it's last years of production.

Too true. So many accidents these days with teenagers driving way to fast
without the experience to back them up when they need it. Just yesterday I was
passed on the right shoulder by two kids in an Acura Integra. Needless to say,
but the shoulder switched to grass and gravel, and the Acura took a header
across three lanes and into the divider when the kid had a panic attack and
hit the brakes.

Ahh. One who bases conclusions on future events which have yet to take
place. Let's just wait and see for that one shall we. Word from several GM
plants in Canada is that it's a no go.
BluCivicSiR
Come up to Toronto sometime. We'll do Montreal in a little over 3 hours. That
should satisfy your cravings.
BluCivicSiR
I'd never try to argue that the T/A isn't a sports car. Whether it's a REAL
sports car remains to be seen. When I think of REAL sports car, I'm thinking
of cars like the NSX, the Ferrari, the Porche and so on. Ford Mustangs and
Camaro type cars are sporty cars, but nowhere near that range of performance.
While many people seem to argue that the Civic isn't sporty...compare it to
the competition in it's own price range. Sunfire? Cavalier? Golf? Corolla? I
mean seriously. At least give the damn car some credit. If I wanted to drive a
big block V8, I'd be driving one. Personal preference dictates that for the
moment I'm not. Nothing wrong with that is there?
To be honest, if Canadian winters weren't such a bitch, I'd be driving a
Mustang GT myself. Unfortunately, the weather here means putting it away from
the winter and I'm not interested in driving a shitbox to get me through the
winter. As it is, my Civic is for the winter months, which I'm on my
motorcycle from April to October.

Two words for you there Jimbo: RED and NECK. Just for your information JR,
Honda, GM, Chevy and Ford cars are ALL made in the USA. Idiot.
BluCivicSiR
yes, but where does the money go in Honda's case?
Except for the Chevys made in Canada and the Fords made in Mexico.
Evidently Jimbo just woke up from a 30 year nap and hasn't caught up
with current events.
