It might explain the pressure problem I'm having that is forcing oil out of
the dipsick after a good run. I'm getting a new dipstick as the one I have
isn't sealing the pipe properly but just in case it is not the problem I
wanted to do a test.

Hi Carl,
How many miles had yours done at that point? And, if you don't mind me
asking, how much did it cost to have that done?
Cheers,
Matt
Cost me about £40 for everything - head set from GSF and other small bits
and pieces needed to do the job. Took a weekend, and at a leisurely pace -
spent a long time cleaning everything up before putting it all back together
again. V pleased with the job and well worth it. Not a hint of smoke, not
oil burnt.
Did look into a garage doing it for me (local mechanic, not dealer) and was
quoted £300.

Ditto with me. Make sure you put a new cambelt on at the same time too
(unless its relatively new). I also put new head bolts in, just for good
measure

ditto again. as i said to Matt in an email, a mate had his done for around
£250 on a 106 XSi. there was no way i was gonna spend that much. plus by
doing it yourself and taking your time you know its done properly (this is
of course assuming you're a fairly competant DIY mechanic)
Aha .... i think i'm in an excellent position to provide your answer.
Basically i have pulled the head off my 105000 mile citroen axgt
to fit a kent cam kit, etc,etc.
Before i pulled it off, i did a cold dry,cold wet, hot dry,hot wet
compression test.
Readings:
Cold dry.
1= 150 psi
2= 155 psi
3= 150 psi
4= 145 psi
Cold wet (Or two squirts of oil into each cylinder).
1= 160 psi
2= 160 psi
3= 155 psi
4= 160 psi
Hot dry (After running up to temperature, burning off all oil).
1= 150 psi
2= 150 psi
3= 150 psi
4= 145 psi
Hot wet
1= 170psi
2= 170psi
3= 165psi
4= 165psi
No big differences between cold/hot/wet/dry, so i assume my rings are
good and valves are sealing ok.
Actually, the heads all over my bench now ... the exhaust seats are
slightly burnt, but not pitted ... the inlet valves are virtually as new!!!!
I am extremly impressed with this high revving 1.4 engine ... no
cam wear or scores also no valve wear, the honing in the bores is very
visible and everything is just ripe for my cam kit.
In fact, every bmw i've ever opened up (all over 100000 miles) have
had MORE bore wear, more cam wear and more valve wear, especially
micro cracks on the ends of the valves.
Looks as if peugoet/citroen/renault designed a good lump!!!
Very good idea to have the cam half sunk in oil ... none of this oil sprayer
nonsense that bmw use to lubricate the cam ..... about 2 seconds after it
starts!!!
I suppose, as with all cars, neglect makes for a smokey engine.
Hope the info helps.

Thanks Carl (for the separate email too) and thanks Ed. Can you talk me
through what is involved? Is it an "engine out" job?
I'm probably a below par mechanic, but my dad is a pretty good one so
between us we could probably do it.
It's very strange - the car runs well, no smoke, no steam, no blue exhaust.
It's a bit hesitant especially when cold but I put that down to needing a
new dizzy cap and fuel filter. Prior to it dropping oil out of the dip, it
never used any oil at all. But for the last 2 months, after a good run out
(usually motorway / dual carriage way stuff) it blows a good proportion of
the oil out of the dip!!!
I have a new cambelt that needs putting on anyhow so that's one less thing
to buy!
Cheers,
Matt

Thanks for the info! I think it's a great engine too. Mine's covered 126000
miles now(!) and as far as I know this is the first thing to go wrong.
Cheers!

If you still wanna do it, then let me know and i'll write you out a list of
what to do (or you could buy a Haynes manual)
As for the hesitation from cold, that seems to be a common feature with the
Solex carb. Although setting it up properly would probably help (must get
round to doing that!)

Yep, first thing I checked - free-flowing.

Not a bad idea!

I have actually got a Haynes manual - maybe I should read it!!!

Ah, good point! It does need adjusting a bit - I did it a while ago but I
think I set it slightly too low on mixture.
Thanks again!
Matt
Hope you get yours sorted.
DONT buy valve stem oil seals from eurocarparts!!!!
They send the wrong ones ... and if you complain ... they send
the wrong ones again.
Duh??? I kept telling them the pick bin number on my first delivery
note didn't match what was on the box that the seals came in.
Same with the second lot!!!
Got some from main dealer ... they cost 3 pounds more than
eurocarparts, but add in the 20pounds worth of fuel that my ancient
bmw 535i used just driving 60 miles to get them ... expensive.
(Ok ... i did come back the long way just for some bendy road thrash!!)

I like the "scenic routes" back from places too - especially with the roof
down and the sun out!!!

It's a real pain in the arse adjusting the Solex, Peugeot couldn't make it
run smoothly, so I started doing it myself. After three days I found the
sweetspot. (Besides it failes MOT because of the CO level was approx 4%,
after the last adjustment of the idle-richness i was 1%)
