I've the 206cc Aut. and that kind of surprise has occured me twice. Because
that's all, I'vent yet contacted the service. Some kind of electronic peak
or contact problem in the pedal sensor, maybe.
What happens if you dissable the 1st gear? (using winter-mode-button) Does
it happen only @ 40mph?
My main problem is instead the 2nd gear. Always when I start, it seems to me
that the 2nd gear slips during 1 second before it takes. This affects in
acceleration. During last months I also noticed some yanks before it changes
back from 2nd to 1st.

I've had a handful of problems with my gearbox - the message "Automatic Gear
Fault" comes up.
Nothing silly like changing to first at 40mph though, that's very odd.

That is probably the torque converter locking up - it's a particular feature
of this transmission. Most cars don't do this in 2nd gear, only in 3rd and
4th (cruising gears) to improve fuel consumption. For whatever reason, the
PSA AL4 gearbox does this - it is a very strange automatic gearbox. For
more info, have a look on my site at
http://users.bigpond.net.au/skystar/peugeot307 - click on 307 Technology,
and you'll see lots of info on the AL4 transmission, which is used on most
Peugeots (which you can find out under specifications).
There is no clutch in an auto, the torque converter is effectively the
clutch.
For instance, you're accelerating casually, and at around 2800 revs, you
notice the revs drop slightly back, and when you lift off the throttle - the
revs don't die quickly, because there is now a direct link between the
engine & the wheels. If you lift off before this lock up occurs, you'll
find the revs drop quite a bit to near idle, 1500rpm or so - because the
drive is going through an oil link (the torque converter).

I've noticed that in my 307. It's rather dangerous actually, it hesitates
before shifting into 1st - for a moment, the car is not accelerating at all.
I've found in 206s with the same 1.6 auto drivetrain to be better in this
regard, but not much better.
