I have a 1994 Nissan Altima which until now has been
very reliable. Now it doesn't start. The battery
has plenty of power, and the car runs fine when I
pop the clutch to start it. Once or twice it hasn't
started when I haven't pushed the clutch pedal down
far enough, but otherwise no problems.

Now when I turn the key in the ignition there is
nothing -- no sound at all. Are there any well-known
problems with the starter, etc on this year and model?

Thanks,

-Rod Price

just because it runs when you pop the clutch doesn't mean the battery is any
good.

If you've checked the positive terminal and its
tight and clean, it might be the starter
solenoid. This is indicated by a clicking sound
with no action(with full voltage). My 93 Altima
needed a new starter solenoid(not available
seperately..bought rebuilt one from parts
america..around 130$ i think).

good luck.

Several months ago, my 94 Altima would not start after
it was driven for about 5 miles and stopped for about 30
minutes. It turned out it was the battery. The battery
may seem fine but it is the voltage under starting
condition that counts. In my case, it gave me 12 V
but very low when I turn the key.

Hello Mr. Price,
I own a 93 Altima and had to replace my starter a
few months ago for just the reason that you
discribed. Try this test, jack the front end
enough to gain access to the starter and tap it a
few times with a hammer. Now try to start it.
Each time I did this it started. The starter is
easy to get, but shop around for a good price. I
bought mine for around 140 dollars.

If battery (& alternator) is ok, your starter is going out. Not really that
bad after 5 years. From simple to more complicated, the problem can be:

( Very unlikely in your case:Connections coroded or not tight, ground cable
etc loose)
The brushes on the motor getting too short
The gear, clutch, spring assembly in the solenoid worn out.
(You can buy parts for the last two items at about $20 @)
The whole starter no good any more. Get a remanufactured one if you want to
save.

Just replace whatever you need. It is not worth the hassle to wait & see.
Problem like this will never get better, always worst.
