I see a massive "can you top this" thread coming, so I may as well get it
started. :-]

'84 Maxima
220,000 miles and still going strong.
Considering it's 20 years old, that's only 11,000 miles a year.
Routine maintenance for the most part - replaced alternator at 185,000
miles, steering rack at 205,000.

Because I have two other auto's My 98se has only a little over 9K miles
But besides Nissan recalling and replacing the Alternator mine was still
working fine :-) there has not been any problems no leaks no shifting
problems I have the Auto. It is just like new it has great power and
drives like a dream. I use Mobil 1 5/30

1991 SE Auto, almost 160K

(Big repairs someone else did)
Tranny at 98K (I was a bad owner then)

(Big repairs I did)
Timing Belt/Water Pump (twice, and never buy a rebuilt!)
Injectors

Runs fantastic. Looks ... somewhat less than fantastic.

I'm hoping and expecting to get to 225K.

As long as you want them to. :-) Seriously, maintenance is KEY! as with any
vehicle, but with Maximas you have more time between major problems, I have
2 right now both with over 100K on them, I just fix what goes wrong with
them......it's still ALLOT cheaper than a car payment!!!! if you figure a
car payment on a comparable model car (like a new Maxima) is around 400 to
500 a month, you can do some MAJOR maintenance for 400 bucks, and I probably
spend that 3 times a year on mine to keep them in top shape...(that's on
BOTH...so you figure 1200 a year to own two cars in great shape...pretty
cheap in my opinion, if I have to replace a tranny or something well then,
I'll just do it!)....I'd drive either one of mine coast to coast right now
without a worry in the world about making it just fine! One of mine needs to
have the starter removed and greased, it's a problem that is documented on
sites like www.maxima.org Which by the way is a great place for info on
Maximas.....
Good Luck!

89 SE Auto traded at 167K miles. Had expected 200-plus, but the body
rusted out first. The car I am sure is out there somewhere humming
along, perhaps in Latin America.....
Bought a mint 95 SE Auto with 97K on it. 106K now and running strong.
Body seems better designed and built for rust resistance. Expect long
life from this one.
Good luck.

If I am not wrong Nissan started using a Zinc coated steel around that
time. They changed again in 99 as a cost saving :-( part of the new deal.

I just turned 130,000 miles on my '97 SE 5-speed. I have had no problems
just normal wear and tear stuff, new clutch and brakes 20,000 miles ago. Its
long overdue the 120,000 service but still runs excellently. I get still
compliments on what a nice looking car it is, when its clean.

Sounds like a nice rig in need of an FSTB. ;-)

How often is that? If it's anything like I've seen ... Oh wait, that's MY
car that never gets cleaned.

BTW, Jim does have a very nice green Max (#3 isn't it?). It doesn't look
more than a few years old.

Good to see you still hang around here now and then Mr. Clark.

I've got a whopping 41,000 on my car and it is running fine. :)

Seriously, though - the mechanic at my local Nissan dealership, where I've
done a couple things to the max (cleaned out the injectors, had it given a
once-over after the accident) has an '88 with well over 300K. He showed it
to me. Nice car.

What everyone says is correct - it is routine maintenance that keeps a car
going. I put 148K on my '95 Jimmy in less than five years. I just sold it
'cause I wanted a Minivan for the kids.

My '87 hardbody lasted 200K and 12 years. It is now being used by a Baptist
Church near my house. I only got rid of it because the 2/55 air conditioning
was getting tiresome and it didn't have power anything.

My '93 Altima lasted 106K and six years, and was replaced by the Maxima.
Don't know who bought that one.

Qualify the question. Years and miles have nothing to do with
each other. My grandma had a Ford Falcon that was 26 years
old and had 54,000 miles. My girlfriend has a Ford Windstar
business van that's 1.5 years old and has 60,000 miles.

Traded my 93 SE 5spd in at almost 200K miles..was running excellent
except it was time to get the WHOLE original exhaust replaced. Did
VTC once under warranty, and a front CV/axle somewhere around 180K
miles, a battery, and maybe an alternator. This car always wore my
tires evenly, right to the end, and my favorite vehicle of all time.

Put 45K on a 2000 SE 5spd and traded it in because of the annoying
fuel-cut problem. Have about 17K on a 2002 GLE auto.. both are nice
cars but I was still more pleased with the 93 as far as driveability.

'90 Maxima SE
262,000 miles and still going.
Routine oil changes at every 3000 miles need to replace motor mounts soon
and have replaced all front suspension components at around 229,000.

This is truly awesome. Not a fluke, because I think most Max's could make
it there with proper care. But the fact that yours IS at 262 makes it
awesome. Nice job!

I'm shootin' for 225. Anything beyond is a real bonus to me.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Had a 91 SE w/ 175,000 miles that I sold last year and replaced that one
with a 99 SE that currently has 64,000 miles. Some minor problems with the
91 (A/C, exhaust studs, etc), but overall a very good car.

My '96 GXE has 160K and still runs great! I hope to get 300K from it.

The tachometer doesn't work and oxygen sensors have been replaced, but other
maintenance has been fairly routine.

I will strongly consider maxima again when this car is replaced.

Hi,

I have a 91 GXE with 221,000 miles. It is still going strong with
just routine maintenance - still stock - original engine and tranny.
preparing for my first major suspension job - need to change the
struts, and brakes.

so go for it -- i would definitely go for a maxima next time....

I cruised through this group to enter some questions and get some
opinions and saw this thread. I have a 1991 Maxima SE with 86,000
miles and have enjoyed owning it, but it's beginning to be in the shop

should be replaced!

Neither, replace the driver! :-) You are not driving the car enough. Knock
on wood, my 92 GXE is still going strong at 222K.

Rust?

I've never heard of a car getting rust. How does that happen? Do you live
in the jungle where it rains all the time?

Just curious.

No....Salt applied on winter roads will eat away at a cars metal
panels over time without proper additional rust protection. Seems the
first 7 years of my car's life (previous owners) there was not rust
inhibitor applied....thus I have a 1989 Max with only 230000 kM on it
but needs at least $2000-3000 CAD worth or bodywork and paint....
