Check the pads. Doing the front disk brakes on Maxima are terribly easy.
As a matter of fact, it might take you longer to remove the wheel than to
replace the pads. If pads are the case, ensure that you loosen the cap on
your brake fluid reservoir. If you are unfamiliar or uncomfortable with the
task, get a Haynes manual. Really, it is as easy as cake.
If you are getting unacceptable gas mileage, you may need a tune up. In the
city, I routinely get between 23.5 and 25 MPG. On the highway, I will get
between 29 and 31 MPG. As a matter of fact, on my last trip from Virginia
to Philadelphia, I got 32.5 MPG with 139,000 miles on the engine ('94 GXE).
