I have two questions, if someone is willing to help. I bought my 92 Maxima
GEX automatic used with 110Kon it and the brakes were supposedly "done"
before I bought it. I've read that the brakes on these modesl can be
squeaky but mine really have been extra screechy. Just last week I heard a
thump-grind against my front-left wheel and now the brakes squeal
constantly. It starts after a couple blocks of driving - the more you drive
the more it screeches.
Also - does anyone know if the Sport/Auto switch on these models really does
anything? All I know is my 3.0L Maxima sucks way more gas than my 86 Ford
Mustang 3.8.

Thanks,

Dave (love my Maxima)

Can't help too much with the brakes, but it sounds like you might have a
caliper piston stuck front left. Concerning the mileage, these engines
should get good mileage; my '89, same engine, still gets 32 mpg on the
highway. We never checked around town since we usually only drive it on
trips.

Hmmm,

Check the pads. Doing the front disk brakes on Maxima are terribly easy.
As a matter of fact, it might take you longer to remove the wheel than to
replace the pads. If pads are the case, ensure that you loosen the cap on
your brake fluid reservoir. If you are unfamiliar or uncomfortable with the
task, get a Haynes manual. Really, it is as easy as cake.

If you are getting unacceptable gas mileage, you may need a tune up. In the
city, I routinely get between 23.5 and 25 MPG. On the highway, I will get
between 29 and 31 MPG. As a matter of fact, on my last trip from Virginia
to Philadelphia, I got 32.5 MPG with 139,000 miles on the engine ('94 GXE).
