Anyone have advice whether or not the Nissan 60K mile service is worth it?
It
costs around $400-$430 for me in california. if not, can i just get one of
the other 15K services and simply ask for a spark plug change? thanks.

Replace coolant, spark plugs, air filter, engine oil, oil filter. All the
rest falls into the category of "inspect this, inspect that". Anybody can
do the scheduled maintenance... a dealer, an independent shop, or the owner
himself.

Ask your friends, neighbors, and coworkers for recommendations. Find an
independent shop with a good reputation. Maybe you will find a former
Nissan dealer technician who opened his own business. That's a good man to
know!

Does your car have an automatic transmission? If so, consider replacing
the automatic transmission fluid at 60K. Even though Nissan does not
require it (under normal driving conditions) many owners add this item to
their 60K service. Seems like cheap insurance.

I'm saying the complete 60K Nissan service should be done. "Worth it" is a
personal judgment. It depends how wealthy you are and what alternatives
you have. In my case, I would do all that service myself, in my own
driveway.

Get that work done, one way or another. If you neglect your car you will
end up spending much more on repairs than you saved on undone maintenance.

If you Maxima has a timing belt, does the 60K service include changing the
belt? If so, it may be a good idea to ask that the water pump be replaced
also.

Good point. This is the Maxima newsgroup, so I assumed HL has a Maxima
(though he did not specify). Since he inquired about the 60K service, I
assumed his car is only 4 or 5 years old (though he did not specify). All
'95-up Maxima engines use a timing chain, not a timing belt. The timing
chain does not have a scheduled replacement interval. It should be
replaced if it becomes loose and noisy. That is relatively uncommon.
