I need to purchase a new or slightly used Maxima to use as my daily driver.
My current Maxima is a '95 w/200K miles on it and very much needs a rest.
After reading some of the postings I am concerned whether the new 2002
Maxima's are as solid & reliable as my '95. Any opinions? Would I be better
off buying a used '99?

Also, is the Max getting a major facelift for 2003?

Thanks.

Fred

The speculation is that the new for '04 Max is going to be brought out
sooner than when the rest of '04 models are... maybe for 2003, or a
mid-model year roll out.

The 2002 has more power, if you want it, than the 2001. Performance,
regardless of power, is the same for 95-01, except for maybe the anniversary
edition SE... but it's not much different.

The car needs a rest? What from? If you buy another car, you have a new
car payment that costs more than maintaining a dependable car, and then you
have two cars to pay insurance for. Whether or not you buy another car,
wouldn't you want to put the miles on the older car, and run it into the
ground before you start racking up the miles on the new one?

Hey man,

I just got a 2002 Maxima SE last month. I LOVE IT. Haven't had a bit of
problems, (as is to be expected), and the performance is UNREAL. I have the
engine all broken in now with just over 1000 miles, and im racing everything
in sight. :) Beat most everything except for 'vettes and m3's and stuff
like that...but its still faster than 90% of everything out there. Anyway,
I know you probably aren't into racing (and neither am I really, I just like
to play with people that want a piece of me. ;) But yeah, the 2002 is a
great car. I opted for the 6 speed manual. Doing 55mph @ 1,500 RPM is
nice. So long story short, I'm lovin mine. Good luck!

Lloyd

My only complaint about my 2002 GLE is it has a wider turning radius than my
1998 had.

I'm not a Max expert but I recently picked up an '02 SE automatic and love it.
It's not even broken in yet so I've been babying it, but it drives and feels
overall like an exceptionally well-built car.

In my opinion several improvements were made in the '02 model:
- The extra horsepower is awesome. Even if you don't care to go out racing
everyone, you'll like the smooth power delivered by the '02. Even at low
speeds, the accelleration is smooth and responsive, not to mention that you can
outrun most other vehicles on the road.
- The tailights which so many people (including myself) objected to on the
'00-01 were vastly improved in my opinion when they went with clear lenses on
the '02. It completely changes the look from the rear. This could be subject
- The headlights/front grille were changed to a more aggressive styling
- Xenon headlights standard

I don't know if there were any changes to suspension/handling for '02 but FWIW
I love the way my SE handles. Confident in turns, but very little vibration
(takes pot holes well, etc).

No. As far as I can tell no changes, cosmetic or otherwise, except the
offering of a "titanium edition" which to me seems like a waste of a grand.
There's more info on the Nissan website about the 2003.

From all the info I have been reading, they are great.
The 2004's are supposed to be getting the facelift. The 2003's (which
my GLE should be in next week) are the same as the 2002's.

The only interior differences between an 02 and 03 are minor cosmetic and
package changes. (I.e.. the side air bags are standard in the gle and part
of the Bose package in the se)

So far so good.....It's back at the dealer today becuase the car came
with at lease one warped brake rotor. Other than that no complaints, it
is a blast to drive and I'm just waiting until the engine is broken in
before I can turn it loose. My only problem is learning the shift
points. I'm coming from an Integra GS-R which had a flat power curve
and red-lined at 8000 RPM. The Maxima SE seems to have a power peak at
about 4500RM. My biggest problem is I can't here the engine (unlike the
really fun, but noisy Integra)so I have to learn the shift point from
the tach instead of the sound. I look forward to learning hos to get
the most out of this puppy.
