Alternator Belt Tension?

Replaced my alternator -- but still have dash light glowing under 35mph (it
goes out completely at highway speeds). I'm thinking it may be a loose
belt -- but, not really sure what the tension should be. I tightened it to
what appeared to be a "reasonable" fit - but only guessing.

(The light was glowing in the same manner when the car quit running with my
wife driving - - the battery had simply run down. However, a bench-check
did reveal the unit was shot.)

If a loose belt may not be the cause of the glowing-under-35mph-light, would
anyone car to share a learned opinion?

Respectfully,

Your drive belt is probably tight enough. A loose belt will usually
shriek, especially at engine start-up. A glowing idiot light may be caused
by a faulty diode in the alternator.
