I recently had my tranny rebuilt in my 1994 Max. The tranny was shifting
almost too smoothly at first but then would slip or would stay in a gear
way too long. The shop went under the hood and showed me a little plug
around the brake fluid resevoir that he pulled loose. The car shifts fine
but too hard in first to second. He said this by-passed something????? Does
any one know what can fix this hard shift? It shifted softly when that plug
was in but erratic though.

they unplugged the dropping resistor.

that controls the voltage to the line pressure solenoid that helps govers
the shift feel

Thanks, that sounds like what they said. If I have a problem when this is
plugged in and no problem when unplugged (except hard shipping), where is
my problem coming from actually?

it is an internal problem with the transmission.

By unplugging that resistor you are causing the line pressure solenoid to go
to 100% duty cycle, which it should not do unless commanded to by the Trans.
control module.

It could be a sticking valve in the valve body, or low pump pressure due to
worn seal inside the transmission.

My 95 had this problem, hard shifting a few years ago.
The resistor in question was replaced for $25.00 and all was back to normal.

It's in the engine compartment. Easy to change, seldom fails though.

if problem is sloppy shifting and goes away when dropping resistor is
unplugged then the solenoid pack needs to be replaced the line pressure
solenoid is in a group of 4 solenoids 2 shift solenoids lock up solenoid and
EPC <line pressure> solenoid they must be purchased in the block and you
need to buy nissan solenoidsd do not even think of aftermarket
solenoids.average price from dealer <shop cost here in south florida>is
about 140.00 depends on where you live ...replacement can be done in vehicle
but takes about an good hour to hour and a half to get the work done removal
of valve body is necessary
