I have had my Nissan Mamina GXE, 1993. I was considering selling it in a
year or two caue it is at 120000 miles right now but the engine is running
so nice I think I will keep it for 4 years now if possible.

Thing is that the paint job needs to be redone and Nissan wants $4000 do it.

I checked Macco out and they have various levels of paint jobs. I was
wondering if anyone has tried this and might know how good they are? They
have two paint jobs that claim to have a 4 year gloss warranty. Though they
are $200 different, I couldn't really tell what the difference was.

Anyway, anything that anyone knows about them, I would apreciate it.

I have not been to Macco for a paint job, but have seen the end result of
ther work.

If you really are going to keep the car for another 4 years, then you need
to do an evaluation on it before you proceed with the paint job.

$120,000 miles does not seem excessive. You are looking at a few things
coming up over the next four years for service that
may influence you.

You drive around 15,000 miles per year, so over the next four years you will
add another 60,000 miles to the car.

1. Have you changed the timing belt yet? or is that expense just around the
corner?
2. A new battery is going to come along.
3. The exhaust system if not already requiring service will in the next four
years.
4. Tires will be an expense over the next four years.
5. A tuneup is waiting for you as well as well as possible alternator, water
pump work.
6. General maintenance is out there.
7. Brakes will be looking for some work in the next few years.

Your decsision to paint, should be examined in light of all the above and
not just as an isolated incident. how much you spend on the painting is
another matter.

Now, for what I saw, it was an older Mustang, already rusting somewhat as
Ford's will do. The paint job was done from top to bottom and generally if
not looked at closely was ok. After two years, the rust was coming through
with a renewed vengance.

Take the time, work it out, and take a look at the new 2003 Z coming out.
Maybe if you save your pennies, you'll be participating in a different news
conference. in the future.

My brother had a Buick wagon that he bought in Memphis that was not rusty,
but just faded. He had it painted at a Maaco shop in Milwaukee. The
surface was not quite smooth so it tried to buff it, but the paint was so
thin that it took the paint off in spots and looked awful. He had friends
in the body working business and stripped and painted a 38 Ford once
before, so he was not unfamiliar with car painting.

Maybe it varies by location, but I would check out examples of their work
before going for a bargan paint job.

My first answer: It doesn't "need" to be redone except in your own mind. Drive
the heck out of it and forget about how it looks. Any money spent on a paint job
would probably be better spent fixing it as it ages

My second answer: You *might* recover the money you spend for a GOOD paint
job. I had a car painted at Maaco once and it was terrible. They do no prep at
all. .If you want to: strip it, sand it, prep it and then reassemble it yourself
and let them paint it, it *might* comeout half nice. I had an old honda with
badly oxidized (on the hood) paint. the rest of the car looked good, there was
no rust anywhere. When Maaco finished, the rest of the car looked fine, the
hood looked like crap.

get a real good detailing done instead - use a cleaner, clay bar, polisher,
sealer, and wax, and you should see a real improvement in the paint - it'll
take about 9 hours to do properly, but will last longer than a new paint
job, and will protect your resale value.

Find a place that specializes in custom cars, and which respects the factory
finish - you'll never get a better one aftermarket.
