The latest saga for me is that my gearbox slips out of 2nd gear. The one I
had before this also slipped out, and it happened when I BACKED OFF the
power, and also crunched when engaging 2nd, suggesting a knackered syncro.
This time though it slips out when I put my foot down, not when I back off.
I'm hoping this is because of my REALLY worn rod unit (about 4" of free play
at the top of the stick) which I'm about to replace. I'm worried the problem
might actually be in the gearbox.
Has anyone had a similar problem. What is the cause?
Thanks

the good news, is that the bits are cheap.
the bad news, you have to strip the box to get at them ....
its actually not that difficult, when you have the box in front of you...

I vaguely remember a fix that would often work to provide another 6 months
to a year of non-popping-out of second gear: (mind you, this memory is
pretty fuzzy) seems like we used to pull the shifter detent springs out and
replace them with the same diameter but stronger springs. We also definitely
ascertained that the "magic wand" shifters on the 850's would fail very
early if a heavy shift knob was fitted. Eventually we found the same problem
with the early Cooper extended shift setup: fit a fancy metal shift knob and
your car would start popping out of gear in a few months.
