Hi Tim,

Yes, there is a company that produces this kit. The ticket for it is very
high. But you have to remember that you are not, at this point dealing with
a "slap on a Fiero or VW" kit car company. You are now playing in the level
of those people who have Indy Lights cars built for them for weekend fun.
There are only three XJ220's in this country and one of them has consented
to allow a mold to be pulled from his half million dollar car. How much do
you think a kit like this would cost. I talked to this company regarding
another project and they require that you show them the donor chassis and
power plant for the car before they will sell you a body. Sounds strange but
I can see their point of view which was explained to me simply.

"We don't want to be embarrassed by one of our cars on the street with an
underpowered VW engine in it so we require a look at the chassis and engine"

That pretty much says it.

Now I never judge someone's financial status by the way they look or what
they drive. (I was working at the shop and went out to buy some supplies
that we had forgotten, driving a parts truck, wearing shop clothes, and
passed an Oldsmobile dealer with a real 308 on the lawn at a great price. I
pulled in to take a look at the car, it was what I wanted to buy at that
moment, and no salesman in the place would talk to me. The said things like,
"Sorry... we can't find the keys, Oh... that car hasn't been received in yet
and we can't show it" Another salesman said that it had been sold already. I
left very angry and went home, took a shower, put on a suit and hopped in a
brand new vette and drove back over. I swear to you that these salesman came
out of the front door kissing my butt to show me the car. No... I didn't buy
it... but I did tell them that it was me.) Another time, a friend of mine
were surfing and we passed a showroom with a new 500SL Convertible that he
wanted, he was having a good day and said "Today's the day I'm going to get
that car" We went in looking like surfers and he tried to pay for it with
his Amex. They nearly threw us out. When the floor manager finally ran his
card, they went out and got us lunch while HIS car was having a cell phone
put in it and a custom sound system and a better security system.

My point is that I was reading your post regarding the Sentra (Not that it
matters in my book, I knew a Maserati Dealership owner who used to drive an
old Ford Aerostar, with a smashed/missing front end most of the time. He
said he liked not having to worry about the car like he does with his
Maseratis) What does rate in my book is that you like to drive your wife's
Sentra like a "race car" that does send off alarms in my head.

An XJ220 replica could easily cost you 50 thousand. (Not the actual price
from the manufacturer) I'm not sure that this is something that you want to
"feel kind of cool driving like a race car" in. For the visual that this
brings into my head, check out the Manta Forum and see their post with the
before and after photos of the Manta after it was driven off a 400 foot
cliff by someone "driving like a race car".

While I am all for people making well-built Kit Cars or Specialty Cars,
(personally I think the major automanufactuers have stopped hiring creative
people) I think you are (for the moment... everyone has the chance to grow)
jumping out of your league with this one.

Check out the Ferrari Spyder post on this newsgroup for the guy who is
selling the duplicate body for $5,500. He posts here often and there is a
great story with lots of building information in it on someone's website.
Don't have the URL handy. This car, completed properly, will "convince"
everyone but actual Ferrari owners and provide you with years of enjoyment.
Maybe not your wife's though as she may not understand your desire after 6
months of driving it (everyone will want to race you) that you now wish to
spend 15 thousand on a proper powerplant for the car.

Sorry to jump on you like this, but you touched a nerve that I have with
people who like to drive "transportation" cars (There is no such thing as an
Escort GT people!) like they are on the track. Worse are the people who want
to show you how well their "souped up" Nova will do at the stop light
against your Lotus.

I wish you all the luck with your future project, see you at the track,

Very delicately put. I agree with your points. I'm not just wanting to
drive a body, but on the other hand I don't need a real Ferarri engine
either. I'm looking for a donor car that I don't have to do a lot of engine
work (I'm not a mechanic) but still remain powerful. I would love to build
on a Vette if I could, but Fiero has a fairly nice engine too. I am a
beginner and have never built a car before. So naturally I'm going to stick
my foot in my...mouth every now and then. Thanks for your comments.

Think about it ??

The cars you have mentioned all have the engines in the front !!!

engine mid or front doesn't really matter. I'm just trying to find a body
style that I like and could work on. Then I'll figure out what type of
donor I need. In turn I need to find a donor that is easy to work on and
already powerful without having a lot of work doen on it. So I have to shop
both at the same time, but I'm keeping my eyes open. That's why the
different chasis.

I have a Ferrari kit on a Fiero and Im tickled to death with it. Its
slightly modified with an aftermarket turbo. Its plenty fast enough for
me. Any weekend Im bored, I jump in it and head out for a couple hundred
miles of those great twisty, hilly 2 lane roads-even by myself. By the
time I get home I happy as can be. Got lots of pointing fingers and
waves and was able to pass several cars in a line all day long. I drive
mine everyday and put 12,000 miles on it since January. Now if you
really want tire smoking and noise, you could put a 350 vette engine
rite in in with one of the available kits. Ill wait till I blow mine up
first though. (Ill put an old 327 vette w/375 hp in mine with a plain
old 4-bbl and no computer crap.)
