Hi,

I recently bought a new "Duralast Gold" car battery at AutoZone.
The battery model is 34-DLG. On the cover over the cell ports (where
you check the level of the electrolyte for each cell) is the standard
Warning regarding battery acid.

There is NO "Maintenance Free" or "Service Free" anywhere
on this battery. Also, there is "nothing" on my receipt. Therefore, I
have the impression this battery is not a "Maintenance Free" battery.

Note: When I buy a new battery, if it is NOT a "service free"
battery, I always check to make sure that each cell has the
proper level of electrolyte..

ISSUE:

Removing the cover for the cell ports is a MAJOR ORDEAL.
I eventually removed this EXTREMPLY TIGHT FITTING
cover.

I called AutoZone and the person did NOT know if this
is a "service free" battery!!!

Does anyone know if this Duralast Gold, model 34-DLG
is a "Maintenance Free" battery?

Thanks in advance, John

I don't know of any these days that are not maintenance free. This one
is. Auto Zone often employs idiots that just know how to push the
buttons on the cash register.

You can see the maintenance free here.

Hi,
I watched the YouTube video. The battery(s) shown
in the video don't match what I bought. The ports cover
is different than what I have.

Also, the guy did NOT say, "maintenance free" or
"service free" battery.

About 4 years ago, I bought a "Maintenance Free" battery, but
it was a different brand. This was for a car I no longer have.
On the battery it stated, "Maintenance Free". There was NO
ports cover on the battery.

Again, Thanks in advance to anyone else, John
.

But the video showed it as such.

Call Duralast and ask them

If it has removable caps - no matter they're hard to remove - it's not "maintenance free."
It may or may not be "low maintenace.'
I've read that using lead-calcium instead of lead-antimony reduces the need of adding
water. I occasionally check the level no matter how hard it is to remove the caps.
They're often misnaming batteries. AFAIK the only car batteries that are "maintenance
free" are AGM and Gel types. I've never owned them.

My experience is different.
Can't remember the last time I did anything to a battery. I did replace
one about 1997 that was 6 years old. New one was still working when I
got rid of it in 2006. Last car I had and my present car I never saw
the battery. Not sure where it is but you go through the trunk to get
to it. My 2001 Buick was under the back seat. Never saw that one
either, though the rest of the car turned to crap.

What if the one cap is flat with the top of the battery and looks like it is
part of the top of the battery?
