The paint job looked great but in six months it was faded out. They
repainted it for no charge, but talked me into another upgrade which
was to last longer, and I had to pay the difference. Six months
later, that paint job was fading so I went back again. Now they said
the paint would have to be stripped because there were too many coats
and they would paint if for free but I would have to pay to have it
stripped. I walked away and never went back, and I will never go
back to Maaco.
I bought a compressor and spray gun and painted the car myself, in
the driveway, bugs and all, and got as good a job for a lot less
money and it lasted several years. I used acrylic enamel automotive
paint from Sherwin Williams.
That's my experience with Maco

Here are some prices I paid in summer 1999 for Dupont paint products:
1 quart self-etching primer with 1 quart converter = $44.65
1 gallon Primer surfacer = $63.72
2 quarts Primer/Filler = $46.94
1 quart Primer/Sealer with 1 quart activator = $47.25
1 gallon Chroma Base basecoat with basemaker = $207.39
1 gallon Chroma Clear with 1 quart activator = $171.00
Add solvents, sandpaper, flex additive (for soft parts), filler, masking tape,
and all of the little things you never think of until you are in the middle of
the project, and the price can double.
PPG paints are comparable in price. However, they now offer a line of products
called the Omni System at much better prices. Compare the following prices for
1 gallon of basecoat with 1 gallon of activator: Dupont = $207.39 Martin
Senour (NAPA) = $200.00 PPG = $217.80 Omni = $72.97. Likewise 1 gallon of
clearcoat with 1 quart of activator: Dupont = $171.00 Econo-Body (NAPA) =
$58.98 PPG = $168.17 Omni = $68.90.
The PPG dealer claims the Omni products are good. He has no reason to lie,
since he could steer me toward the PPG paint at triple the price if he wanted
to. The only negative of which I am aware is that some of the more exotic colors
are not available. I am definitely giving it a try on my next project.
