I am trying to fix a friend's 1988 Chevy Celebrity w/ 2.8L Distributorless
Ignition. I think the wires are messed up (wrong order). He has a crappy
Chilton's, which has so many typos in it that it's almost useless. Actually
doesn't even have the 2.8L firing order; instead has a 2.8L distributor
engine with a firing order of 1-2-3-4-5-5 (that's right, no #6 cylinder -
those cool GM engineers!). Talk about no proof-reading..

Anyhow, a few relevant 2.8L questions:

1) Looking at the engine (front being to the left side; non-tranny), how to
number the cylinders from left to right? Is the front bank 1-3-5, rear
2-4-6 like standard V-6?

2) Looking at the coil packs (imagine them in a straight line left to
right, just as you see the plugs connected to them), what is the firing
order? Is it 3-6-2-5-1-4? That is the best I could imagine with the
Chilton's...

Thanks all,

I agree about proofreading, but Chilton wrote the book not GM. The firing
order is the same on both as they didn't redesign the cam for the coil pack
engine. Same cam = same firing order.
1-2-3-4-5-6 is the correct firing order, but be sure to remember that on
transverse mounted chev 2.8L engine odd side is rear, even side is front.
For some reason, unknown to me, GM decided to invert their cylinder
numbering on this engine. Maybe they hired a ford guy to design it. lol
Can't answer the coil pack question though, my 2.8's all had the distrib.

rear (trans)
-----------
5-------6
3-------4 front of car
1-------2
-----------
Front (belts)
Hopefully someone else will have the coil info.

Thanks much, Bob. You confirmed what I suspected, that the left bank (front
of car) is really even-numbered cylinders. Couldn't pick that up in
Chilton's, although they had the 2.8 w/ distributor down as that. Didn't
know if it applied to HEI, though.

My slam was really on Chilton's, as if GM were really that stupid (of course
not)....

My guess on the coil pack order is that it is the same as represented for
other engines, since they all use the same order for those engines. I'll
give it a whirl tomorrow and see. Just knowing the correct cylinder
numbering system gets me in the neighborhood. Would be nice if someone
could confirm, though.

For those interested, here is the cylinder layout and firing order of the
coil packs for a 2.8L HEI FI engine:

Cylinders (viewed from front of car):

1 3 5
---------- (tranny)
2 4 6

Coil pack order (left to right):

1 - 4 - 6 - 3 - 2 - 5

Just match 'em up. Did more fishing in my Chilton's and found the coilpack
order, which is different from other engines, it appears. It was just a
matter of matching them up with the above cylinder layout scheme.

This car has throttle body fuel injection, i assume. On the top of the
intake manifold there should be a list of numbers that would indicate
the order of the cylinders. at least it does on my 86 celibrity
