When I turn the steering wheel and accelerate, my 99 Buick Regal GS
produces a fairly low-pitched whine. It's not the squeal a slipping
belt makes, but I checked belt tension anyway (by feel only) and it
seemed normal.

Can anyone diagnose the problem or clue me in on additional things I
might check?

Thanks in advance,
Ken

Kendall,
Also take a look at the underside of the serpentine belt as it may be
glazed or worn which could cause slipping - I realize that you said it
was more of a whine. If the car is under warranty you might just bring
it in as they can check the tensioner and for slippage at the power
steering pulley. It could also be coming from the pump itself or maybe
the rack.
Hope this helps,
Joe

Check the power steering fluid too.

The noise you hear is coming from the power steering pump. Follow Harv's
advice, and check the fluid level. Some noise is normal, but if the fluid
is low, then it will make more noise, and if the fluid gets too low, then
you ruin the pump, and that sucks!

AAG scores again! GM couldn't have made the power steering fluid
harder to check if they tried (I could have used arms about 18 inches
longer), but after finally getting to it, it was definitely low.

It shouldn't have gotten that low in a year if nothing was wrong so I
took it in to the dealer for warranty work. (Had to take half a day
off to do it, too, since my new job is in exactly the opposite
direction.) But they replaced a leaky check valve. Thanks, guys, you
were right on.

I did all but crawl under my mother's Regal LS and STILL can't seem to
locate where that PS reservior is! Can ya give directions (stoplights,
right turns left turns etc.) to find it? I know it's on the passenger
side, but I crawled all over the engine (as best I could with it hot
anyway) looked behind it, on the end, still couldn't locate it. That's
why I love my 94 Jimmy, it's got so much room in the eng. compartment
that everything is right up front including the oil filter, it's on the
fender, don't have to search for it or climb under the truck for it.
Not like we really have to worry, it's a 2000, she got it in early June
with 60 miles on it and it just went for it's 1000 mile checkup.

It's hidden pretty well. Under the alternator, there's a manifold
with two hoses coming out of it. The power steering reservoir is
right under that manifold. If you remove the brace that runs across
the back of the engine compartment, then you can reach it from behind.
I'd let the engine cool off, though.
