What is the difference between the GM 3.1 litre and the 3100? Are
they from the same engine family or do they have a different block?

GM uses a LOT of different identifiers for engines.
262V6 = 4.3 Liter = 4300 CC
173V6 = 2.8 Liter = 2800 CC

Mainly they switch the designator IF they do a redesign on the engine.
Sometimes it's just a simple marketing switch. 2800 LOOKS more
impressive on a valve cover than 2.8 you know... ;-)

Same thing. Different measurement standards. One is 3.1 Liters, the other
is 3100 cubic centimeters. Same thing stated different ways.

The 3.1L V6 is the pre-95 multi-port fuel injection engine and the 3100 is
the 95+ sequential fuel injection. The blocks are different as well.
