I'm trying to pull the balancer on my '98 Olds LSS (3800 N/A) to replace my
crank position sensor. I've been told that the threads for the three small
bolts that secure the puller to the balancer for removal are M6x1x80+mm, but
the three bolts I picked up (M6x1x100mm) and tried to use just pulled out of
the balancer as soon as I applied any real pressure to the puller. The tips
of the threads are stripped, it doesn't look like I had decent engagement
with this size of bolt. So the obvious question is, what size bolts should I
really be using?

The bolts I tried were metric grade 8.8, which at the time I was told was
stronger than grade 8. I've since learned that they're closer to standard
grade 5. Still, I would've thought that properly fitting grade 5 bolts would
stand up to the hand ratchet I was using...

Crankshaft Balancer Replacement
Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 37096 Flywheel Holding Tool
J 38197-A Crankshaft Balancer Puller
J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter

Hold the flywheel. Use the J 37096 .
Remove the balancer bolt.

Important
Do not attempt to separate the pulley from the balancer hub. The balancer is
serviced as an assembly.

Use the J 38197-A in order to remove the crankshaft balancer. Use 1/4 in
bolts to attach to the pulley. Screw them in 1/4 in.
Installation Procedure
Tools Required
J 37096 Flywheel Holding Tool
J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter

Lubricate the seal surface with engine oil.
Install the crankshaft balancer.

Notice
This bolt is designed to permanently stretch when tightened. The correct
part number fastener must be used to replace this type of fastener. Do not
use a bolt that is stronger in this application. If the correct bolt is not
used, the parts will not be tightened correctly. The system or the
components may be damaged.

Notice
Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must
be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or
sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints,
lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces
unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping
force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and
specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts
and systems.

Install the balancer bolt. Hold the flywheel with the J 37096 . Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 150 N搶 (111 lb ft). Use the J 36660-A in order to
rotate the bolt an additional 76 degrees.

Thanks, that's pretty much what my FSM tells me. Many home mechanics have
used a regular ol' harmonic balancer puller to do the same job, rather than
the GM-specific part. So the question remains, what is the thread pitch and
diameter of the three bolt holes in the balancer?

The service manual specifically calls out 1/4" bolts does it not? Since
1/4-28 bolts are uncommon my interpretation is that the pulley takes 1/4"-20
bolts.

Hmm... Taking a closer look at my physical paper FSM, all it says about the
balancer removal is to use the 'special tool' and it's part number. It
doesn't actually say what size bolt at all. I was going by what I read
online where the consensus seems to be that M6x1 is the correct thread for
these balancers. Now I'm reading that the GM-type puller comes with 1/4-28
bolts. I guess if I pick up three of each pitch, something's gotta work...

1/4" X 28tpi

There is also a special puller that does not use bolts. It has hooks on
it like an A/C clutch puller. That one is what you need on the earlier 3800.

And that wound up being the correct answer. I used 1/4"x28x3.5" bolts and
the pulley came off with a hand ratchet and a little sweat. For a car that's
driving me nuts, at least it has decent compresion.
