I have a 1988 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe with Cal Emissions that stalls while
driving. When I press the gas pedal to revive it, it surges for a few
seconds before resuming normal operation. The problem seems to occur about
every few weeks and lasts for about 15 seconds when it does act up. I've
had it in the shop but the dealer cannot duplicate the problem. In a
desperate attempt to fix the situation I have replaced the following parts:
fuel pump, 02 sensor, throttle positioning switch, and the control module.
Has anyone had a similar problem and what did it take to fix it?

Regards,
Rick

Make sure the two rubber hoses that attach to your car's intake,
intercooler, and throttle body are TIGHT! Hand tightening with a
screwdriver is not enough; use a socket driver and apply 10-15lb-ft of
torque. My '88 used to stumble under boost at freeway speeds and under
moderate to heavy acceleration until I tightened those hoses.

Also, you may want to check your ignition system - I replaced the cap,
rotor, plugs, and wires when I bought my car (used). That smoothed things
out quite a bit.

Wife's old '86 Crown Vic did the same thing. Problem was the fuel
filter; changed it every 12 mos, and problem went away.

Check for computer error codes; if there is an engine control componant
that is at fault, it will tell you about it.
