I would like to check the proper adjustments of my C6 Transmission in my
'86 Ford F-250. I was always taught to make sure everything is set
correctly...

So, My question is:
Has any of you out there seen or known of anyone who's checked and reset
the

Intermediate Band Adjustment

on this Tranny? And has the tranny lived to tell about it? The local
transmission place tells me that, if I change it to specs, it could ruin it
if it's bad. Why, then, would they put the adjustment on the outside and
give instructions in the Chilton's? {Besides, I think it's slipping or out
of adjustment because: It shifts hard from 1st to 2nd, and in a manual
downshift to 2nd from 3rd, there is no engine braking whatsoever.} IT'S A
DIESEL, for cryin' out loud!!!

Thanks
RickyDee

I see no reason it should harm anything. All you are doing is setting
the corect clearance on the second band which in turn sets the correct
servo piston stroke. Since the servo piston is timed by fluid
pressure and quantity along with filling an accumulator, it only
stands to reason that the engagement of second gear will be quicker
and smoother with the band properly set.

To set the band, it is recommended that you replace the lock nut.
With the lock nut loose, tighten the adjusting screw to 10 ft/lb.
Then back the svrew back out exactly 1 1/2 (1.5) turns. If the trans
is in genrally good condition and fresh fluid this should help if not
cure the problem.

Now, on the Diesel, you have to also set the VRV (vacuum regulator
valve) mounted on the injector pump. This provide the vacuum signal
to the transmission mudulator valve that controls the 1-2 upshift.
BTW, check the vacuum lines to make sure there are no vacuum leaks.
You may also needd to replace and adjust the modulator.

The process for setting the VRV is a more complex procedure. The best
source of diagnosis and repair is the ATSG (Automatic Transmission
Service Group) manual on the C6. They cost about $12 from NAPA or a
transmission parts supplier.

It suggest in the case of the C6 behind a Diesel, the first thing to
be checked and set in the event of harsh or otherwise screwed shifting
is the VRV.

Good luck

run the screw all the way in tight back out 1 1/2 turns, lock down the nut.
no manual 2nd from 3rd gear range, do you have TWO upshifts in the drive
range, could you possibly have only one upshift, ie... shifts from 1st to
3rd around say 35mph. if your band screw keeps on turning in, you have a
broken band, but they do make a slip in intermediate band which can be
installed while trans is in the vehicle, this is not oem part, will have to
be purchased at trans supply house, check with "transtar" or "slauson" if
you need a slip in band they are on the webb.
if you have (2) upshifts in the drive position you probably have a
vaccum related problem. by the way was that an aamco shop ("A"ll
"A"utomatics "M"ust "C"ome "O"ut) ha-ha-ha good thing i am in anoymous
mode.

Hello. I have an 88 F250, C6 tranny, 7.3 liter diesel, and a few years back I
tried adjusting the band. The result: I could not get the truck to move
forward. I readjusted the band and it was ok. Can you give me a technical
explanation of what happened? Perhaps I did the adjustment
incorrectly. thanks, david

never seen that one before but i would wager that if you adjusted the band
too tight then you would have experienced a bind up condition, as the 2nd
gear band holds the 3rd/rev cluth drum stationary, and you would have had
the sprag, or planets and band playing tug of war.
ist gear drive range=fwd clutch on,sprag holding band
off
2nd gear dr range=fwd clutch on, band on band
on
3rd gear dr range=3rd/rev clutch on
band off
rev=3rd/rev clutch on, low/rev clutch on
band off
