Good lord! I hope not! The V6 barely fits in as it is!

YES THERE IS!!

"The Astro Van V-8 swap is probably the easiest V-8 swap around. For
example, there is plenty of room in front of the V-8 to run a clutch fan. The
radiator and its position can remain stock. The transmission position remains
stock. The driveshaft remains stock. The shift linkage remains stock. The
"doghouse" over the engine remains stock. There is plenty of room around the engine
so that a number of different exhaust manifolds can be used. About the only things
that are not stock for this swap are the motor mounts. "

OK Mikey check the newsgroup title...alt.autos.FORD...then check the type of
van they're talking about on the url you sent...that would be an ASTRO van
not an AEROstar. ASTRO vans are made by General Motors, AEROstars are made
by Ford. If you've ever worked on an Aerostar than you know that they are
one of the most miserable vehicles to work on if you have to access the top
or sides of the motor. I'd rather do a tune up on a 69 Mach 1 with a 428
than adjust the valves or change the spark plugs an an Aerostar...

Put an eyeball on that one, would ya? AEROSTAR, as in FORD AEROSTAR. ASTRO
VAN, as in CHEVY ASTRO VAN. Totally different things...

The folks who build street rods and 4x4's and such say that if you've got
time and torches, you can put anything into anything. There may be plenty
of room in an ASTRO van -- a 4.3 and a 305 are *almost* comparable in
size... But a v8 in an AEROSTAR may be a tight fit.

Is this the same Mike from the previous post? Judging by the e-mail address
and header info, it is. This is the same Mike who answered a question about
an AEROSTAR with a web address for ASTRO VANs, isn't it? Uh, hey, don't say
anything unless you know what you're talking about.

I always say "yes" to these kinds of questions, but I think a V8 aerostar
is just going too far. You would have to add on to the front fenders and
make it longer. That doesn't qualify as a conversion, really. So give me
an emphatic NO also. Notwithstanding you can put anything in anything a
lot easier than, say, putting a man on the moon.

And remember, if you don't read the subject line, don't say anything at all!

Given enough time and money, ANYTHING is possible! This one would take
years, and many cubic yards of $100 bills.

A 60 degree V6 barely fits. A 90 degree V8 is almost a foot wider. Try removing
6 inches from each of the front footwells, and you will see there is nowhere for
pedals or feet.

Why not?
The 302/5.0L is a very small engine and has been shoehorned into cars
as small as the 60's Sumbeam Tiger. The only problem might be the extra
weight of the engine on those springs, and the drive shaft which, if
aluminum, may not be up to the task. Servicability is another subject
altogether.. Plug changes ought to be REAL fun!

I own 2 Aerostars and have watched this group and alt.trucks.ford and have
seen this question asked before. The answer has always been the
same.......No. Have you actually seen under the hood of an Aerostar ?? If
you ever had, you would notice that the V-6 is an extremely tight fit to
begin with. I also believe the V-6 is a 60 degree design meaning it is
narrower than a V-8. I believe all Ford V-8 are of a 90 degree design,
meaning that they are most likely to be wider than the V-6 used in the
Aerostar. I may have posted a smartass response originally, but I believe I
DO KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT; at least on this subject. I have NEVER
claimed absolute authority on ANY subject to any newsgroup I post to. So,
Mike, I hope this has cleared up any discrepancies on your part on this
subject. Don't mean to step on any toes, but next time you ought to lighten
up a bit yourself.

Plug changes are already REAL fun. Thank heavens for platinum plugs. The
302/5.0L is still a 90 degree V-8 that is much wider than the 60 degree V-6
of the Aerostar. If you ever seen and/or worked under the hood of an
Aerostar you would understand our collective thoughts on the impossibility
of a V-8 ever fitting under the stock hood of the Aerostar. I also agree
that anything is possible given enough money AND talent. If anyone has been
successful in the past of gracefully stuffing a V-8 under the hood give us
all a shout and tell us all the sordid details !

Want a V8 in an Aerostar? See the site below. The "ONLY" way to fly.

That is to say, the "Boogie Van."

Yes, I knew someone would post something about a monster truck, that's why
the KEYWORD to my post was "Graceful Conversion". Nonetheless, the pic was
appreciated.

Randy,
How many times have you replaced the thermostat in the '92 Aerostar?
I bought a used one in '94 and have put 3 in it and the current one
is now acting up.

There are several conversions, some going as far back as the early nineties. It's a lot of hard work considering the small engine bay. The easiest conversions are reportedly using a Windsor v8, supposedly the flywheel matched up with the tranny from the 4.0. Those were the highlights of that conversion, don't ask about the dirtier details though. Just do your research. And one guy on here posted about Chevy Astros? Being the easiest v8 swap around, really? They're the "easiest" around because they've always come with an optional v8 from Chevy to begin with...

I know this post was started years ago, but I wanted to reply anyway. I built a 5.0 Aerostar in 1996. After 150,000 miles with the first V8 I upgraded to an HO engine. Check it out on YouTube. When I wanted to sell it my son made some videos and posted 3 of them on YouTube and there were so many questions that I made a video out of some photos I had of it.
Everywhere I drove it people would ask me about it because it was so different. I drove it on 2 Hot Rod Power Tours and it seemed like a hit because there were people all over it and pictures taken for a magazine. Check it out and read some of the comments, they're awesome.
