Can anyone tell me the best way to put a 289 v8 a pinto. Or point to a
website or other source. Sincerly R Barnett

Use the Mustang II V8 parts. The engine bay is shorter than a Mustang II so
the use of an electric cooling fan is required or relocate the radiator to
front of the radiator support. If you use a C4 tranny, you will need the
Mustang II flexplate, converter, and C4 bellhousing (they were smaller to
clear the trans tunnel). I'm not sure about a stick. Upgrade the rear to the
Mustang II 8" and brakes. You may want to do the same to the Front brakes as
well for safety's sake.....It fits, but bearly........

A freind and I were building a 71 Pinto sedan (one with a trunk, not a
hatch) way back in '86. We dropped a 302 auto AND cut of the roof....He took
off to the navy, and his parents junked the car before we got a chance to
drive it.....

...Which is fine and dandy IF you can find MII parts!

A better alternative is to forget about the v-8 and put a turbo t-bird
2.3 drivetrain in the car. Lighter, same hp, fewer headaches, and it
bolts in!

I've seen many v-8 Pinto swaps, and with the way the Pinto engine
compartment is set up, half the v-8 hangs over the front wheels. V-8
Pintos corner like dogs. Then, you can't resell them.

The first guy's Pinto turns 10.90's at 125 mph in the quarter! Far
better than most 5.0 Mustangs!

That's what I'm going to do to my Pinto...

On the 4 speed in Marty's post. I believe that the Mustang II V8 stick
will work. Be sure to get all of the parts.

Currently collecting parts to build a 1980 V8 Mercury Bobcat.

I agree that the Turbo4 is a better option. I put a 85 T-Bird Turbo2.3 in my
76 Capri and that puppy flew. It bolted right in place of my standard 2.3
and still got good gas mileage

There are several Pintos with 2.3 turbos, either from Thunderbird Turbo
Coupes or Merkur XR4Tis. They are relatively easy to put in, make wicked
power, and with an intercooler, can spank a lot of Mustangs. Also will fit
in the car much better.

Call Advanced Adapters. I believe they still make a conversion kit for
the V-8/pinto swap. Currie Enterprises should be able to supply the rear
axle (go with a nine inch, it'll handle anything You throw at it.), and
pick up a copy of Street Rodder magazine for front suspension pieces that
will handle the stress Your going to put them under(Street Rodders LOVE
Mustang II front ends.). All the suppliers Mentioned here will also be
in there, or pick up a copy of Super Ford.

The turbo 2.3 is lighter and more practical...but you know what? Fuck practical. I've got a '72 Pinto with a SBF, a t5 trans, a 10 point rollcage, and a small shot of nitrous. There's not a 2.3 turbo in the world which sounds as good as my V8. And when you open the hood at cruise night....nobody cares about a turbo 4 in a car that came with a 4....but a V8 makes them stand back and say "holy crap!".

Mustang II parts are definitely key. Use the motor mounts and, importantly, the oil pan *and* pick up. A t5 trans will fit right in nicely and use either an 8"...which I have and don't recommend because it's hard to get parts for. Mine has a rare and expensive 4.11 gear and posi....or a good 9". You'll also want subframe connectors or a rollcage to keep the body from getting twisted into a pretzel. Hooker makes swap headers for this application which look wild. The 4 front cylinders go under the crossmember and meet up with the other 4 at the collector. You have to cut some holes in the fenderwells to make them fit though.
