About 165 HP shouldn't be too far off... and don't forget, you didn't ask
anything about torque, or axle ratios, and these are net rated figures with
all accessories connected.

Why would you think that?
The torque figure will be rather high, I should think.

The 351W, in very basic form w/regular gas, regular heads, cast iron
manifolds, and a Ford marine profile cam w/ a Holley 600 / 4160 4 bbl. puts
out 240-250 hp all day long at about 4600 rpm (at the crank) with a great
torque curve. After that, the sky's the limit! It comes down to HOW MUCH $
do you want to spend?

On a related note can anything be done with an old 351W to build one up? I
have a 1977 LTD Landau that the body is tore up but the motor and tranny are
still good. And IIRC has only 50,000 miles on the odo. I'd like to get the
motor and build it up and likely put it in a F100/150 (late 70's or early
80's model) that I see from time to time with a blown motor that can be had
relatively cheap.

That's what I'm looking at. Initially I would likely just pull and do a once
over, pull the heads, check the cylinders and replace the seals and gaskets.
The car has sat in place since 1987 (Car is in Alabama, I'm in Illinois --
save the "cars on concrete blocks jokes" :-) ) Depending on what I find
after I remove the heads and oilpan. And how much I would spend on a truck
body.
Later when the budget would allow I would go back and put in the cam, 4 bbl
carb with Edelbrock manifold. High compression pistons aren't practical
here, only gas around here is 87 octane with 10% alky at the Farm Bureau. 20
miles to the nearest BPAmoco. (I don't live in middle of nowhere but it's
closeby)
