I'm interested in buying a used 2000 or 2001 Ford Taurus.
The question is what engine to choose? The 3.0-liter 12v V6 or the 3.0-liter
24v V6.

Which one is most trouble free and gives the best gas mieage?

Thanks for your replies.

Are you looking for longterm reliability? If so, the 3.0L
12v Vulcan engine is about as bullettproof as anything ever
built. If you place performance a notch over reliability,
the 3.0L 24v Duratech is the handsdown winner. I just
picked up a 2001 Sable with the 3.0L 12v engine for my wife.
It does all she wants and is getting about 25mpg in everday
driving. She has a fairly heavy foot.

We have a '96 GL Wagon with the 12v ("U" code VIN.") and around
105,000 miles. The car has been very reliable and we have had zero
problems with the engine. Performance wise the the 12v seems fine
-pleny of merge speed etc.

If you can, try to drive both the 12v Vulcan & the 24v Duratec. Safe bet
that you'll take the Duratec.

I've got a '99 Taurus with the Duratec and I've driven 2002 Taurus's
with the Vulcan and there's no comparison.

The Duratec blows away the Vulcan in performance with just about the
same mpg.

They're both good engines. The Duratec (DOHC) has been rated as one of the
world's top engines for a few years now. It's significantly more powerful,
and has a good, refined feel. I highly recommend it.

There's nothing wrong with the Vulcan (3.0 OHV), either, but it's not as
refined. To my knowledge, there are no serious issues to with either
engine.

I just bought a used 2000 SES with the Duratec 24V, and it is great!
Feels solid, the acceleration is superb, and the handling has gotten
great reviews. Whether you want performance or not, you
should go with the Duratec. So far we've gotten around 25MPG in
town driving and around on the "back roads" of Marin County, CA.
(Heavy (me) and Light (wife) footed drivers)

The real MPG test will be when we drive it down to San Diego this Spring.

I especially like the new design over the previous year Taurus.

A 12 valve 3 liter engine is an OHV - overhead valve engine. Also
known as a pushrod engine. It has 2 valves per cyl.

The 24 valve is a dohc - a double overhead cam - with 4 valves per cyl
- and 2 camshafts on each bank.

It is a much higher performance engine. It is based on a porsche
designed block with the heads designed by Cosworth
