Maybe someone can help me with this problem. I have recently purchased a
96 Aerostar 3.0L with electronic OD trans. After driving for 5 miles or
so the "overdrive off" light on the gearshift stalk starts flashing on
and off. The transmission also shifts very hard from first to second and
also when it downshifts from second to first when coming to a stop. The
trans works very well for the first couple of miles after starting cold
but as soon as it warms up, the problem starts. At the recommendation of
the local dealer I have changed the fluid and filter to no avail. Can
anyone shed some light on this particular problem?

Thanks in advance for any help.

After you change ALL SIX spark plugs, wires, inspect the distributor
cap, and put in a new fuel and air filter, report back and tell us if
the van is running better.

The 3.0L engine has a distributor (and cap) at the rear of the engine,
the 4.0L uses a distributorless ignition system. From your
description, the transmission appears to have low hydraulic pressure,
probably from internal leakage. It will most likely require
professional repair.

the initial description of your problem was vague enough that it
sounded like engine problems. It was suggested that you perform a
tuneup on the engine, which apparently you haven't because you don't
even know where the distributor on the 3.0l aerostar engine is.

If you do decide to go looking for the distributor, remove the cover
in between the front passenger's and driver's seats for easier access
to the engine components.

once the transmission starts slipping, the problem will only get worse
with use and cost more to fix. Sounds like time to have the
transmission overhauled by the local shop, you won't like the price
though.
