A Friend of mine has a Ford Contour. Real nice car, but there is a speed limiter on it somewhere around 112. Does anyone know how we could remove this addon. The car has the potential for a lot more speed on the open road. Any help would be appreciated.

Why on earth would you want to drive a little car like that 112 MPH?  I hope you've installed a rollcage and wear a helmet.

Seth,

The 'Superchip' removes the limiter. See http://www.contour.org under
Contour FAQ, Parts & modifications.

And if your friend has Internet access, suggest that he/she join us on
the mailing list.

You are RIGHT. Ford contours are not designed for sustained high speeds.
Make sure your life insurance is paid up.

From what I understand the speed limiter is there for insurance reasons. The
OEM tires are S rated if I remember. Many other cars have limiters too. THe
limiter also works as a rev limiter in neutral and the lower gears. The
Contour is basically a European Mondeo and it IS designed for sustained high
speeds. In fact it is very stable at speed. The Duratec V6 in particular is
very happy to drive all day long at speed. I don't say it's safe or prudent
but it is designed for it. In fact the Contour SVT has no limiter and can do
135+ MPH it comes stock with V or Z rated tires I forget which.

A chip can remove the speed limiter and increase the rev limiter high limit.

I don't get why people think 'little' cars (the Contour
isn't that small, weighing over a ton) are unsuitable for
speed. In fact, the smaller the better because Newton's
physical laws need to be challenged less when turning.
At 112 mph, you are toast in any road car unless it is
kitted out for racing (the Contour is raced in Europe,
as the Mondeo in the touring car races. They do go
quicker than 112). The bigger the worse the car is
at speed since you have to remove more energy to stop,
and turn more mass when manouvering.
Unfortunately there is a tendency in this country to
buy the biggest tank you can afford rather than learning
to drive better to avoid crashes in the first place...

There, my friend, you are wrong. Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique were designed
by Ford of Europe. They are also the folks that have the Autobon (sp?). Also,
if you have a Contour, you might want to noticed the gear ratios. At only 60
mph, the engine is happily at ~2700 rpm. What does this tell you? The engine
is very happy at high speeds. I think they planned this so that when you have
to pass someone at greater than 100 mph, there is no need to downshift. The
engine is already in it's peak range at about 80-90 mph.

I agree that drving at these speeds is not safe, but the accusation of the car
not being made for the speeds is wrong.

I have to agree here on this one for a moment! In my high school days my
parents had a 1974 Mercury Capri with the 2800 cc engine and standard
transmisson. This too I understand was raced over in Europe. I had no
trouble at all leaveing a 396 Chevelle behind on a two lane windy New
England road! Smaller is better!

This is very true. I lived in Europe and I owned a 95 Ford Mondeo 2.0 liter. It had
135 HP and it felt very stable at higher speeds (100-120 mph). I once test-drove
the 2.5 V6 which was even better. I think the Contour is a lot better car than many
people think. Too bad that the backseat isn't little more spacious, that would make
it a really good seller.

Please elaborate.

I'm seriously considering buying one and I tend to be a
do-it-yourselfer.

Thanks.

The oil filter on the 4-cylinder Zetec is behind the passenger wheel, kind
of a pain to get to.
The Duratec has it in the front, but it is also a pain to get to. No matter,
the Contour is a superb car for the money.

If you get a Zetec with a 5-speed, youll be happy. The Zetec ATX is a
grocery-getter, no more. The Duratec with ATX is a superb family sedan, and
the Duratec 5-speed is more fun than should be legal with your clothes on.
In fact, many Contour mailing list members will directly attest to this. :-)

As I echoed this to Lance in the CEG, the Contour/Mystiques receives
Automobile mag's All-Stars (Best-In-Class) rating 4 years in a row! Check out
the May '98 issue.

I've heard almost consistenly good thing about the Contour, which is
why I've pretty much been sold on it. I'm planning to get it with the
Duratec (I've been driving a little 4 cylinder since I've gotten out
of college and I'd like a car that will answer 'how high' when I tell
it to jump for a change). Unfortunately, I can't drive a stick, so
I'll have to settle for the ATX..,
