Hi folks,

I have a problem with my '89 Grand Marquis. The Automatic transmission is
acting up. I have delayed and rough shifting with no Overdrive.

Can anyone help?......I can't really afford to get a new car so any help or
creative attempts at fixing my poor car would be appreciated.

Thanks..

Pooya

If you have the 5.0 engine, it's most likely the TV grommet has failed.
A $2 part at the dealer; ask for the brass one with the cotter key. The
TV grommet is in the little pivot thing on the throttle linkage under
the hood.

Thanks Sharon,

I'm gonna got on that first thing in the morning. Just wondering if you
know how easy it is to change it?

If possible do not drive the car. This problem will definitely take out the
trans. The grommet can be easily replaced by any shadetree mechanic
wherever the car is now sitting. Drive it more and you're looking at a few
hundred dollars for a used tranny. Jim

This is so true. I had the bad luck of a mechanic leaving off the
TV connection after a manifold gasket replacement on my '90 Grand
Marquis. I drove home, 12 miles, and the transmission was shot.

Since it was my long time mechanic the boss of the shop reimbursed me
75% of the cost of the rebuilt tranny. I had over 100,000 miles on it
so the bright side is that I got a tranny for around $300.

Hiya -

My parents '88 Grand Marquis acted like the one described here but the
tranny link is OK at both ends. Now it jerks when shifted into drive and
only has Low. Reverse is a smooth engagement and works fine. I am 3 hours
from the car but the fluid isn't burnt. Any ideas for this one?

Thanks!!

I had a similar problem with my 89 Crown Vic Wagon. The kick down rod had
fallen off the plate at the throttle body and the transmission thought it
was in reverse and forward at the same time - it ruined itself. Had to get
the tranny rebuilt - about $750. Everything okay now. Don't wait. Look at
the little plastic clip on the kick down rod that snaps into the throttle
lever on the throttle body. It's on the driver's side and connects next to
the throttle.

My Dad's '88 is acting strange, too. All the kickdown lever stuff is OK and
moves as it should. It has Low and Reverse only. Low is a very hard
engagement (in any drive position, it doesn't shift) but Reverse is normal.
The car has 40k on it. Oil smells OK but might be slightly dark. My folks
aren't driving right now so it sits. It lost passing kickdown before it
stopped shifting. I'd like to fix it instrad of spending a grand on a
rebuilt tranny. Any ideas? One friend thought it was a stuck valve body
but another said something about bad accumulators. I'm a fair mechanic but
I don't have the means to pull the tranny.

Thanks.
