In the past few weeks, my 1992 Ranger has twice had the "check engine" light
come on for no apparent reason. Oil pressure gauge is fine, oil level fine,
engine running perfectly well. Once I stopped to check oil, and when it refired
the light did not come back on. Second time I briefly cut engine off and
refired, and this time it came on again. However, after brief stop, it did not
relight. There is no apparent problem, however. Suggestions?
The Ranger has been a great truck. It has app. 125,000 miles on it, and I never
had to do any work on it at all until about six months ago, when I had to have
the air conditioner repaired.
Engine seemingly runs as well as the day I bought her.

You really should get the diagnostic code from the truck's computer. If the
engine light comes on, the code will be stored in the computer. Most
service garages can do it for you (or do it yourself). The check engine
light comes on usually when the computer can't get a reading or the reading
is out of normal range on one of the many sensors in the engine. My 91
ranger's light comes on when driving and after getting the codes, it was
minor problems so I just ignore it. My truck still passed emission tests.

But there is a reason! Your 92 Ranger has an EEC-IV operating system,
and when the check engine light comes on, this means there is a code
stored in it's memory. Either unhook the negative battery cable for 30
seconds to clear the code from memory, or do the wise thing and
purchase a codes reader and fix the problem. Codes readers for EEC-IV
systems can be purchased from such sources as Summit and Eastwood in
the $35-50 range, and come with instructions. Good luck.

Some blogs talk about EGR valve, and let me know if you hear anything about this, mine has 140,000 and lite on and off for 2 years now, and i replaced oil sensor.

Well, the CEL has nothing to do with oil or oil pressure, or even
temperature. It is strictly a fuel and ignition/emissions related item
and you need a pre-obd2 scanner to read the code and determine the
problem. Without a scannaer all you are do is guessing. Actually on
SOME you can read the code by jumpering the proper pins on the EEC
diagnostic plug, and count flashes on the sel with key on and engine
not running. There is also a key on engine running test that requires
specific inputs from the operator.

I had a similar problem with an Aerostar. Never was able to find the problem. Eventually the check engine light burned out and solved that problem. ;O)

I've never had a CEL that I could not find the cause of, and only
one? I couldn't fix
