The warning light "Service Engine Soon" in my car (Ford Escort 97)
comes back again this morning.
37 days ago, this light came out the first time. After 33 days
checking in different garagrs, the problem was not solved. Few days
ago, I changed the transmission oil and filter. The warning light was
gone and I thought the problem was fixed.
Maybe the transmition oil is not the problem, but what it could be?
This car had been checked with computer by different garages and the
error code is:"1443 EVAP Purge". So far no one could understand what
is the meaning of this code. Anyone has any clue what is the problem?
This is the first car in my life, a nightmare, a money eater. I am a
student and can not send it to the junkyard. So sad........
My previous two posts can be found here.
Any suggestion would be apprecisted very much.

I had that problem with my Accura. I don't know diddly about the setup
on Escorts, but in general there's a plastic cannister full of
charcoal somewhere that's supposed to absorb gas fumes from the gas
tank. When the engine is running a valve is opened by the car's ECU
periodically so that the engine sucks air back up through the
cannister and purges the gas out of the charcoal. If the MAP sensor
doesn't detect an appropriate drop in vacuum when this is happening,
you get that error code. The problem on my car was a clogged purge
valve that I cleared with the aid of an air compressor.

I think you need to find a better garage!

Get a shop manual for the car and a cheap set of wrenches.
Start up on a learning curve that will stand you in good stead in
future years.
There's a TSB on this. Article 97-13-8
FORD: 1997 ESCORT
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1997 TRACER
CALIBRATION:
7-07C-R10, 7-07T-R10, 7-08B-R10, 7-08C-R10, 7-08P-R10, 7-08T-R10, 7-08S-R10, 7-08W-R10
WARNING:
THIS MODIFICATION IS AUTHORIZED ONLY FOR THE LISTED ENGINE. PERFORMING THIS
MODIFICATION ON OTHER ENGINE CALIBRATIONS IS UNAUTHORIZED AND COULD CREATE
LIABILITY UNDER APPLICABLE FEDERAL OR LOCAL LAWS.
ISSUE:
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate and Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1443 may be stored in
memory. There may be no driveability concerns present.
ACTION:
Reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The revised calibration will recalibrate the EVAP to test for sufficient
flow under normal driving conditions. This should reduce the possibility of the MIL lamp illuminating. Refer to the
following PCM Application Chart for correct PCM usage.
When servicing vehicles with MIL lamp illumination and DTC P1443 only, verify Purge Flow Solenoid (PFS) voltage at
idle is between 0.9 and 1.3 volts. If so, perform Pinpoint Test HW 19 in the 1997 Powertrain Control/Emissions
Diagnosis (PC/ED) Service Manual (use the latest level CD-ROM). If PFS voltage is not in the specified range, proceed
to Pinpoint Test HW 18. If the EVAP canister purge valve - PF sensor assembly holds vacuum within the specified
range, reprogram the PCM using the latest level CD-ROM.
NOTE:
REGIONAL APPROVAL MUST BE OBTAINED WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE PCM.

Some vehicles may exhibit a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated with Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
P0455, P0456, P0457, P0442, P1442, P1443, P1450 or P1455 for the Evaporative Emission system. This may be
caused by loose or leaking hoses, loose or broken fuel cap, etc... A leak at the top of the fuel filler pipe neck between
the filler pipe and plastic insert is often misdiagnosed as a fuel filler cap leak.
