Hypothetically, say I were to have knocked the side mirror off of my 2001
ZX3 by foolishly backing into an immovable object and had to get it
replaced. How much would it cost to get it replaced at a Ford shop here in
the States? Would getting a non-Ford replacement be unwise?

Not sure about power, but the manual mirrors are around $60.

I would go see if I could order one for the new SVT focus, they fold! So in
case you hit something they would just fold in rather than break off.

Folding side mirrors (and a remote fuel-door release, like in my old '93
Escort or any number of current competitors) should have been standard
equipment from Day 1. I wonder if we could file a class-action suit? :^)

I "lost" my mirror to a semi truck tire and at the dealer it would have cost
$250+ - it is power and all one piece...at my local guy it was $125 total (Ford
part) and it needed a little bump and paint too...the actual part wasn't that
bad actually. Sticks out too damn far though and I was trying to sneak past the
semi...oops. I like the folding mirror ideas though. Good luck.

I didn't completely break mine off of the car. But it did stick out at a
weird angle. Anyways, I managed to fix the mirror. I have the remote
mirrors, so to remove it I just had to pull the l/r adjustment switch out,
then pulled the black plastic piece off the door. The mirror is held on
with two bolts. I used some epoxy and a clamp to glue it back together, let
it dry overnight and then reinstalled. I had to use a piece of double sided
foam tape to stick down the top of the mirror to the door because the little
prongs that stick into a hole had broke. Unless you look at the mirror real
close you wouldn't know it had been fixed.

I ended up having my dealership put a new mirror on. I admit that I was
pleased to pay a "mere" $135 for parts and labor. I was afraid that the
cost would be much higher.

Less than 24 hours after I got my 2001 Focus Wagon, someone decided to use
the drivers side mirror as a boot rest. I decided to get it replaced
although I could have just had it repaired. It cost me about $160 including
labour.

FYI

Folding mirrors would fold if you hit something going forward, but would
still break off if you were to back into something.

I came back to my car in a parking lot to find the passenger side
mirror hanging by the cord (power windows). I taked it in place and
bought a replacement mirror ($65 at the Ford dealer).

It looks like I will need to take the door panel off in order to
replace the mirror, so the question is, how do I do this?

I see the screws around the edge but what about the door handle and
the window knob. How do I remove those?

Thanks in advance.
