Hi,

I am about to inherit an 85 Bronco II, with standard transmission, low
miles on a rebuilt engine.
I was in the market for a 4X4, standard or manual.

So I have a potentially dumb question- pardon my lack of mechanical
knowledge, but
how hard (ie expensive) would it be to add 4X4 capabilities?

Thanks

Hello,

I m a long time certified veteran ford mechanic and I ve worked on
many Bronco II s over the years. I ll try to answer your question as
best as I can.

Adding 4X4 capabilities to your 85 Bronco II is not a simple or cheap
task. You will need to replace the entire front suspension, transfer
case, front driveshaft, and front axle with parts from a 4X4 Bronco
II. You will also need to install a 4X4 shifter and switches, and
modify the wiring harness and dash. Depending on the condition and
availability of the parts, you could be looking at spending anywhere
from $2,000 to $5,000 or more on this conversion.

If you have a C-5 automatic transmission, you can use the output shaft
and tailhousing in a C-4 and mount it behind a 302 V-81. This will
give you more power and reliability than the stock 2.8L or 2.9L V6
engines. However, this will also increase the cost and complexity of
the conversion.

If you have a manual transmission, you can keep it as it is, or swap
it for a different one that matches the transfer case you choose. The
4 & 5-speed transmissions used in these vehicles do not have any
real problems, and will outlast the automatics.

The easiest way to add 4X4 capabilities to your Bronco II is to find a
donor 4X4 Bronco II that has the same year and engine as yours, and
swap the entire drivetrain and suspension. This will save you a lot of
time and hassle, and ensure that everything fits and works properly.
You can also sell the parts you don t need from the donor vehicle to
recoup some of the cost.

Another option is to sell your 2WD Bronco II and buy a 4X4 one that is
already in good shape. This might be cheaper and easier than doing the
conversion yourself, and you will get to enjoy the benefits of 4X4
right away.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you do your research and plan
ahead. Converting a 2WD to a 4X4 is not a weekend project, and it
requires a lot of skill, tools, and patience. You will also need to
check the local laws and regulations regarding emissions, safety, and
registration of modified vehicles.

I hope this helps you make an informed decision. Good luck with your
Bronco II
