My 86 SE (2M6) has had damage to the rear bumper since before I got it
about 5 years ago, and I want to get it fixed.

It looks like the previous owner might have backed into something low
(a short pole?) to the ground because the bumper is only dented in at
the bottom left and pulled down away from the lights. The lights are
cracked as well, but I wonder if that isn't from something else (like
someone trying to pry the bumper back in place) since there is no
damage surrounding them.

I'd like to consider replacing the fascia and tail-light assemblies
myself if possible (I'd have to bend the metal bracket that holds the
top of the fascia), but wonder if it's just too important to have the
bumper (the actual impact absorber underneath the fascia) repaired as
well.

Has anyone had an autobody shop do this, and how much was it?

Thanks

David

David - Can't say for sure without seeing it but it's easier to replace
than repair these things, unless the damage is really slight. The parts
are readily available in junkyards and not very expensive. If the
guardrail under the bumper is straight and the frame isn't bent up near
the taillights, I'd get the parts and replace. You might even find the
right color and not even have to paint. The rubber thing under the
bumper is necessary because it keeps the bumper in shape and supports
it. It's an easy job. Do it yourself and save a few bucks. If you can
figure how it all comes apart, let me know.
