I'm buying my first Dodge truck after years of Ford Explorers so am
seeking any input from this newsgroup on the dealers I'm looking at.
The guy at Brentwood Dodge seemed really nice on the phone, and they've
got a 5-star rating, and is willing to work to order a new vehicle if
he can't find the one I want.
Has anyone used Brentwood Dodge? If so, what's your opinion?
Also considering:
Lithia Dodge (Concord - non-5 star)
Redwood City Dodge (Redwood City - non-5 star)
I'll be buying soon, so feel free to drop me a note!

Stick with the Explorers :) I'm currently "restoring" my '92 XLT back to
drivable so I can quit driving my Dodge so much. My '92 Didn't have a
single problem until 135k (A/C went out, fuel pressure regulator) and the
transmission went at 155k which is what currently has it "down" (never try
to rebuild an A4LD yourself). The Dodge has had numerous serious problems
before it rolled 60k miles. When it runs it runs good, but when it doesn't
it seriously annoys me.
Unless You *NEED* a big pickup truck, don't buy it. Trust me - it rides
like crap and EATS gas. It doesn't do anything for picking up girls, making
your genitalia larger, or being "cool"...
But, if you gotta have a truck, I can't see buying a Ford F150 at all (at
least for the 99 MY they had some horrible brakes unless you bought the XLT
package (4W ABS) and wanted too much for the 4.6L V8, I'd probably buy Dodge
again and hope to god to pick a good one.
Also look real close at other people's fuel econo and driving habits, diesel
+ 2500 can easily be worth it in fuel econo alone much less lowered
maintenance expenses on the very-long-term (damn 318 and 360 parts are so
cheap they're hard to beat).
As for worrying about a dealer's 5-star status, don't worry about it.
They'd be firebombed if they didn't meet 5 star ratings for things other
than having a showroom up to DC's spec, etc etc. If you check deja I'm sure
you can find the old post about what *exactly* 5-star means (if memory
serves its 51% customer satisfaction, 71% "first time" warranty repair).
The only dealer that would actually write up a service ticket and WORK on my
truck was not and still is not a 5-star dealer since they build a new
building. Word of mouth seems to give that dealer about a 90% approval
rating, vs the 5-star dealer about 30 miles closer that nobody has a good
thing to say about.

At this point, I'm about to restore the old family home, so a gas-hog
sized pickup is what I'm in search of.
Later,
at least thats my logic on the subject... :)

I actually prefer a stick, so this isn't a problem. In fact, IF Chevy
hadn't dropped the stick in their 2001 Extended Cab I would be posting
to the Chevy group, not the Dodge group. Most certainly more back seat
room. Better resale, and (alegedly) better workmanship. Alas, they got
rid of it and so I go to the Dodge due to the back seat having better
room.
I don't have an answer regarding the Dodge dealers but "JS" is mostly a troll
that any variety of troubles to tell you about.
I used to live down that way, The Dodge dealer in Lafayette sells quite a few
trucks. I have a friend who is a mechanic there. I think his brother works at
Brentwood Dodge. Can't remember hearing anything unusual about them.
God, Guns, Mopars, Sex & Rock & Roll!!!
Are you and BeeBop related?? You two are starting to sound alot
alike.....troll

I had damned wonderful performance from my Explorer. Just because I happen
to be on a Dodge usenet group I'm not going to deny it.
Read the rest of the post, I'm no great fan of Ford and their Crap150. I
don't have experience with their heavier trucks so I'm not gonna say much,
everyone I know with 3/4 & 1 ton trucks has a clue and a Dodge w/ cummins -
damned fine trucks.

I wonder if that is due to the area of the country that you are in. In Ohio,
Dodges seem to hold resale value as well as any other truck, especially the
4x4.
This post begs a question I've had in the back of my mind. Everyone
that volunteers this, says that the Cummins diesels actually get better
gas performance compared to their petrol cousins. I ask how much better
is better?
Am I getting better fuel economy, and better durability by going to a
RAM 2500 w/cummins, than the Ram 1500 w/Vortec V8??

You miss "JS"s" point, HIS truck doens't have any resale value.
The term "HOOPDEE" comes to mind

I wonder too! Here in western Massachusetts, the Dodges have as much or a bit
more resale value than similar other brands, based on looking through the various
car/truck sales rags and newspaper ads.
Of course there is always the amount some dealers will try to get past you.
When I traded in my old '88 F-150, the dealer only wanted to give me $800 for
it. I couldn't believe it! It was in good shape, nothing wrong with it at
all (I *really* wanted 4WD and a Dodge, that's why I got rid of it).
I ended up trading it for $2500 at another dealer but know they likely sold it
for $6000 (based on ads of similar vehicles). I was trying to sell it myself
but around Christmas time, no one is buying cars/trucks!
I'm sure resale value varies greatly by region, but here, Dodge value holds up
well.

and I'm pretty sure he smokes crack - and not because of the dodge either...

You're going to have to forgive me this one. I've been looking at too
many damn car/truck brochures and the name VORTEC just sticks in your
mind!! Of course, I meant to say Magnum.

I haven't owned a 1500, friend of mine has one and loves it but I don't
know the specifics on power and mileage, but being that I just traded my
'96 F250 4x4 with the 5.8L (351ci) engine for a '97 2500 w/ Cummins and
5spd, I can tell you it's like night and day. I get double the gas
mileage, awesome power, fuel is a LOT cheaper (The Ford ran best on 89
octane which goes for about $1.80/gal whereas I can get diesel for
$1.42/gal), there's no contest on durability, the Cummins will outlast
them all. Also, the ride on a 2500 club cab longbed is actually very
nice, it's almost not trucklike. My F250 was definitely a stiff, bouncy
truck. As for the 1500 vs. 2500, the 2500 is going to be more durable
overall since it's built to deal with more stress and heavier loads
(speaking from a frame, suspension, and axle point of view), but it's also
a heavier truck. For me it's no contest, I'll take a 3/4 ton or better
over a 1/2 ton any day of the week.

In this area of the country, gas outnumbers diesels about 50 to 1 if I were
to venture a guess.

I'd check out their service department (in person) before buying anything
from them. I bought my truck from Napa Dodge (in Napa, duh...). The sales
people were great, but the service department was incompetent and didn't
seem to give a shit.
I now use the service department at Santa Rosa Dodge, and have been very
happy with them. If you're already considering Concord or Redwood City,
why not make the extra trip up there and enjoy some nice scenery while
you're at it? :) I highly recommend Santa Rosa Dodge. My dealings with
their service department have been excellent, and the few times I've
talked with the sales department there, they've been very helpful as well.
Just my $.02...
Oh, BTW. Napa Dodge had a "5-star" rating too. Which apparently means that
"5-star" doesn't mean very much. I don't know how they earned that if they
took any look at their service department.

A friend of mine named Ezra works there as a line mechanic. Any work he has
done for me has been very good. Of course anything I had done was covered by
"warranty" :)
Thanks much!!
Right now, it actually looks like I'm going to go with Lithia Dodge.
The fleet manager has spent the most time with me, and the guy from
Brentwood is actually going on vacation!!
The trick now is deciding exactly what I want, and whether I can afford
it. :-)
I want 4x4, but its a couple grand I don't need to spend.
I want leather, but since I am getting the stick I can't get the 26H
package so I cannot get the 10-zillion way driver and passenger, heated
seats! Cloth saves me over a grand.
Then there are the other things like two-tone paint, etc.
I had flirted with the idea of the diesel, but figure I would need to
go through 10,000 gallons of fuel before I make up the cost of the
diesel engine (based on a 15 cent difference in gas vs. diesel). Not
worth it for me.
Decisions, decisions. (At least Dodge made it a decision for me by
discontinuing the Amber Fire Mist color).
