I have a 1996 Dodge Ram 3500 Club cab with a Cummins 5.9 Diesel. Recently
while towing the temperature gauge fluctuates greatly and quickly. Ranging
from 140 (low mark) to 180 (mid mark). But even while towing our 12k+ fifth
wheel, the engine does not overheat. I have read that this temperature
fluctuation is not normal. Anyone have any thoughts on this??

Thanks.

We have a 97 and we have experienced the same thing since new. It IS normal
and does not hurt anything. We belong to a club that consists of only Dodge
cummins owners. They have a quarterly magazine(averages about 100 pages). It
has all kinds of technical information from other members, TSBs, and
aftermarket parts companies. VERY informative. If you're interested in
joining email me for more info. Not trying to drum up business, just trying
to share really good information. I am just a member.

I didn't know Dodge had a 5.9L Diesel. I thought this was the gasoline
360 cid motor? In any case, my 5.2L '97 1500 stays around the mid mark
and doesn't move much... :)

The Turbo Cummins is a 5.9L I6 Diesel. The 5.9L V8 is the gasoline
engine.

In the Chrysler shop manual, under "cooling system diagnosis-diesel"
and then under "temperature gauge is inconsistent, cycles and/or is
erratic" it says: (1) is cycle normal? a-The gauge pointer may move up
and down within the normal range. This is the reaction to the cycles of
the thermostat.

Then it goes on to list the possibilities of leaks and loose parts. But
since my 94 Cummins has been cycling ever since I first took notice two
years ago, and there are no leaks or loose parts, I would conclude that
it is the way the thermostat works. I did buy a new thermostat to take
care of a slow warm up problem, but have not installed it yet so I
couldn't tell you if a new one doesn't cycle as bad as an older one.

If your upper radiator hose has a spot that is above your radiator cap,
it is probably full of air and won't allow the water to circulate. Need
to burp it. Common symptoms for this issue, although I don't know what a
2004 weasel is.
