Please do *NOT* post MIME-formatted or HTML-encoded messages to the
newsgroups! With the exception of certain clearly defined binary
newsgroups, USEnet is a _text_ medium, period. As such, the ONLY
appropriate format for messages is plain-vanilla ASCII or equivalent.
Posting MIME/HTML to USEnet accomplishes only three things:

1. - It needlessly and uselessly bloats the traffic which must be
transported by all newsfeeds, 'net-wide.

2. - It causes all kinds of grief for many folks trying to read USEnet
using all manner of equipment and software which does _not_ make
the same set of (erroneous) assumptions that _your_ newsreader
software does.

3. - It exposes you as a clueless newbie.

Thank you for your understanding and future cooperation.

Please do *NOT* post this stupid warning message to every non-ASCII post you
come across.
Posting this stupid message over and over again accomplishes only three
things:

1. It needlessly and uselessly bloats the traffic even more than the
original post, which must be transported by all newsfeeds, 'net-wide.

2. It causes all kinds of grief for those of us who have not annointed
ourselves a Usenet-vigilante,
by having to constantly trip over your annoying drivel.

3. It exposes you as someone who has nothing better to do than patrol the
newsgroups, looking for
any sort of infraction to pounce on.

Just on the off chance, are you a member of a townhouse or planned
development association?

I don't. Just to the most obnoxious examples of brain-dead HTML-izing that
I happen to be forced to deal with while pursuing more productive matters;
and rarely more than a couple of times a day, spread over at least a couple
dozen different newsgroups.

I doubt that.

For each such post I make, at least to the more popular newsgroups, it can
be safely assumed that many hundreds or thousands of people see it -- and
hopefully, learn from it. If even a small fraction of them therefore
refrain henceforth from this particular form of mis-posting, the net effect
would be to reduce overall 'net traffic by at least a couple orders of
magnitude more than my post adds to it.

Gee... And you _don't_ think the sort of non-standard, ridiculously
bloated, and downright "broken" HTML auto-generated by Outlook Express is
"annoying drivel"? I wonder why that would be? Hmmm... Ahhh, yes... it's
right there in the headers. Well, this at least partially explains it:

> X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 4.72.3110.1
> X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V4.72.3110.3

Hardly.

But I do know that if occasionally posting that request does have the effect
that I believe it does, it will _reduce_ the time I (and thousands/millions
of other USEnet users) have to spend wading through similar crap in the
future. That makes it a net gain.

Why do you ask? And how is this relevant to the issue at hand?

I have an idea for you. Create your own dodge newsgroup where you can
appoint yourself as a moderator. YOU have been told time and again that YOU
are the ONLY person who cares about HTML and binary posts. ALL windows and
Macinotsh machines will correctly display HTML derived posts.

Scanning a couple dozen newsgroups a day is productive? I believe
that it is entertainment and education for most of us, not a mission
with set parameters........And as such, I believe that proper use of
the Engish language, common courtesy, and some common sense, ought be
enough to get us by......

Actually he's not the only one who cares. MindSpring started
enforcing the no binaries in test groups a few months ago. So now I
dont get a chance to see the pics if they are just posted to the
group.

This bothered me to start with, but when I realized the legitimate
reasons for it and got the benefit of all the spam it wipes out I was
quite glad they made this change
