Chrysler is shutting down 7 production plants and laying off 25,000
employees due to slow sales. Merry Christmas from Germany!

Also 2 billon dollars of their emergency money has disappeared. This
money is reserved for new designs and development. Nobody seems to
know where it went.

The end is near.

What does slow sales have to do with Germany? Slow sales is slow sales,
people for whatever reason are not buying chrysler products.

It's my understanding that the plants that are being shut down are car
plants. Not truck and SUV plants. If my understanding is correct these
shutdowns won't really effect the corporation financially since their
customer base has for several years been 90% trucks. I can gurantee you
that their truck, SUV, and minivan plants are still running strong (if not
stronger). If any of the tuck plants are shutdown at all, it will probably
be for relocation to Germany or god knows where else, but not because of
lost sales. A plant shut down can actually be profitable to a company
especially if they relocate it and can hire in new employees at smaller
wages and begin operation with new and more efficient tooling.

Beekeep: someone is going to be buying himself some nice xmas presents
with that money. Heard also things have slowed down at Ford, maybe its
time for car companies to realize why many people are not buying new.
Just like agricultural machinery. Here in Canada for a brand new combine
looking at around $250,000. For that price buy more land and custom hire
someone to harvest your crop.

Manufacturers have to see that people are tired for paying more for
products be it cars, machinery, also power and gas.

dale,
i wish i could agree with you. i cannot. we will bitch, whine, and
moan.....but we will continue to buy new cars, no matter what they turn out.
in this modern day disposable, look good first society, we have no choice.

Nate: your right in a way. I have been thinking this over. Back in the 70's
could buy a Lincoln for $15,000. Now here they are around $50,000. Hasnt stop
people from buying them. Even houses been going up.

Brand new combine was $80,000 in 1980. Now over 200,000.
They are still designing new machinery and will still be selling them.

That is true, and you could buy a new Mustang for about $3000 back in the
60's. The one thing you didn't mention is inflation. It's not JUST the
cost of autos, houses and equipment that has gone up, but wages as well.
I can see your point *if* we were still bringing home the same amount of
money that we were in 1980, but we're not. I agree that the costs are
high for such things and the cost is going up faster than our income can
compensate for it, but it's not so out of line when you consider the big
picture. For out of line, consider that in 1975 my grandfather bought a
half acre lot in Saratoga, CA. for $5000, built a house for $3000. Now
consider that today that property is worth $1mil. For a small 3br house!

In the end, though, it's what the market will bear. Enough people buy
items at their current prices and the company makes a profit. If people
stopped buying profits would tumble and companies would fail...or they
would lower prices down to where people would buy again. Less profit is
better than no profit, but with people today and this thing called
"credit", people keep buying high-priced items like mad and the companies
see no reason to sell for less. If a product doesn't sell it's not
because it costs too much...it's because there's no market for it.

You also have to factor in content. I fondly recall my '72 Buick Electra 225
that I paid $800 for. When I think of it I always think of it as being
"loaded". The other night I was thinking about it and comparing it to my
commuter car...a '98 Civic EX coupe. With the exception of cornering lamps,
vinyl top and white walls, the Honda has everything the Buick did plus dual
power mirrors, sunroof, ABS and a host of safety and mechanical advancements
(electronic fuel injection comes to mind). This comparing a then "luxury
car" to a current "econobox".

BTW. My mother and stepfather farm in southern Manitoba and nothern North
Dakota and have a custom harvesting business so your comments on farming and
farm equipment are enjoyable for me to read.

A couple of other points for the Buick:

Pure, good ol' Detroit V8 power. I could head west out of Denver on I70 with
the cruise set at the then illegal speed of 75 and, traffic and state patrol
permitting, climb Floyds Hill and still be setting right at 75 when I hit the
Eisenhaur tunnel. No fuss, no busyness, just the steady, even flow of power.

Fogging up the windows while in the full-size backseat of a Detroit land

NightOwl:
One meeting I met a fellow farmer who also farmed both sides of the border. One
son, of his, farmed in Canada and the other son in U.S.
The one in the States was making money and doing ok. The one in Canada, was having
troubles and his wife had to drive schoolbus to make extra money.
All this boils down is that your government looks after its farmers better then
our Canadian government.

The other side of the story, I imagine they both farm the same amount of land and
grow roughly the same crops. The farmer did not mention if both boys were good
managers. Maybe the one in Canada like to use newer equipment and had more debt
loads. Then its not the governments fault.
Theres always two sides to a story

Redneck: you got to turn your keyboard around when you type next time. You got
it all ass backwards
Heres the truth you guys:
The American Farmer gets more for his farm production then the Canadian farmer.
Why?????
Because the American government, the taxpayers, are subsidizing the American
farmer way alot more then they do in Canada.
The Europeans are the highest subsidized. They went through stravation during
the war years and know what its like to be without food.
Here in Canada we have a smaller population and less people means less taxes to
collect.

They should move the border between both countries. Make a new one and run it
North and South. From Manitoba down to Texas.
Why????
The eastern states and providences have been running the whole country. We in
the western part of North America mean nothing to the east. They have higher
populations, have control over our manufacturing and banking systems.
The only thing the west has is: majority of food production, natural resources
like oil, natural gas, lumber and water.

I'm seeing something here:
1. auto makers cutting back on color options to save money
2. auto makers cutting back on metal, making lighter and smaller cars to save
money. Old cars you could dance on top of the hood without caving it in.
Notice the lighter frames.
3. putting cheap tires on at the factory to save money e.g. goodyears

But the prices are still going up.
Sure there have been plenty of advances in car engineering and we pay for it.
But then to cut back on somethings. We pay enough for a new vehicle, why not
charge more and not cut back on the essentials.
