Something to think about. On my newish 2000 Dodge/Cummins QC 4x4 6spd, I've
been getting around 17mpg in mixed driving. Today I drove out and back 220
miles and got closer to 22mpg (the gauge is still just over the 3/4
mark=>about 10ga). On the out direction I had a storm driven stiff (15-20
knots) tail wind and my MPG readout on the overhead showed a steady 24MPG at
70MPH. My previous miles driven/gallons in tank measurements showed this
gauge to be pessimistic by 15%, so I was apparently getting about 27MPG.
The wind died down before I drove home and I got more normal fuel economy in
that direction.

Just to point out, there is more to fuel economy than the fuel, speed and
engine, especially when driving a vehicle that has the aerodynamics of a
brick. Here in central California a stiff westerly blows most afternoons,
while a gentle easterly blows most mornings. Commute in one direction and
get awesome fuel economy. Commute in the other direction and get horrible
fuel economy. Similar conditions exist in the LA basin and probably
elsewhere in the country.

Mike,

What are the specs of your truck? I want to order the HO 6 speed and was
wondering about the MPG.

3.54?
2500?
Long Bed?

Ashley

No, Ashley, no! You don't want the Cummins! Get the V-10 like I
have and get 10 mpg in mixed driving and 12.5 on the highway...... ; ^

I have the 235HP/460ft-lb stock Cummins engine with a 3.54 axle, long bed
without any cover (yet) and Bridgestone M724F 245 70R19.5(G) tires mounted
on Rickson truck steel rims. No air dam, with cab lights. I had to drive
from Silicon Valley to Stockton to get a Line-X liner applied; at 95miles
without detours, Stockton is the closest Line-X dealer. Geez, you would
think that with all the money and potential business around here somebody
would start a franchise! Good work by Line-X of Stockton, btw. The store
owner mumbled something about opening a shop near Capital expwy auto row in
April.

The 19.5" wheels should be adding about 0.5-1.0MPG, but I have never driven
the truck on the original wheels so I do not know. You have to manually
compensate for the 8% speed and ODO error, pulse rate adapters for 4wheel
ABS Dodge trucks are not available yet. I expected the machine to
approximately equal the fuel economy that I got from my overweight,
underpowered, puny capacity Toyota 4runner, and it has not let me down.

I run 60PSI in the tires, which is well below the MFGs recommended minimum
inflation pressure of 85PSI. However, they rate 85PSI at 4000lbs load per
tire, and I probably barely have 2000lbs on any of the tires. They just
barely get warm to the touch after driving on the freeway for extended
periods.
