I just bought a new 2000 Ram 1500 Quad Cab. I currently have the factory
FM/Cassette and speakers in it, but I want to install a CD player, and
possibly new speakers.

I looked at a Pioneer DEH46DH CD player that apparently is designed with
Chrysler in mind. What about this particular stereo in a Ram? Any
recommendations? Should I bother with new speakers or is it better to leave
the factory ones in?

I do not want to put more than $500 into this, but I do want a good stereo
sound.

Thanks in advance.

I've got one of these Pioneer DEH46DH players in my 1999 Ram 1500. It
sounds very good with the stock speakers and installation is easy too.

Allow me to duplicate my post to Rich:
----------------------------------------------------
Any DIN sized in-dash unit will fit with an adapter. Just make sure you get
an adapter that matches cosmetically with your dash. Also try to get a head
unit that has ISO DIN mounts. It is much more secure than bend-tab mounting
(thereby reducing skips). If you pay someone to install it, make sure they
use the ISO DIN mounts, too. Most head units that have ISO DIN holes also
have bend-tabs, and a rushed installer may use them because they are easier
to install. I have a dash kit from soche in my '96 Ram holding a Clarion CD
player and it looks great. Expect to pay at least $15-$20 MINIMUM for a
good dash kit (mine was about $30). Cheap ones don't usually hold the
player rigidly enough, resulting in an annoying number of skips. They also
usually look like crap.

MOST of Pioneer's CD players are good, but be careful; some of their
low-priced stuff is real JUNK. The do make some great 1-1/2 DIN heads that
will fit your dash without an adapter, but I think they look kind of cheesy.
That's just my opinion, though.

The removable faces on the oversize Pioneer units are pretty bulky and can
get to be a pain in the ass.
----------------------------------------------------

You can get good aftermarket speakers that will kick the crap out of the
factory ones for anywhere from $75-$1000 per pair. My personal advice (as a
lifelong car stereo junkie and former owner of Supreme AutoSound of Houston)
is to leave the factory speakers in the rear, get a head unit that has
cosmetics and ergonomics that you like, and spend the remainder on a good
set of FRONT speakers. After all is installed, fade the rears out until
they disappear, then roll them just slightly up again. This should do a
fairly good job of emulating a live venue. If you are willing to spend the
funds (and your truck is equipped with the A-pillar holes), get a component
set with a good external passive crossover. Sets from MB Quart and the JBL
GTI series are great, and will make your stereo image and sound better than
you ever thought possible. Just beware of paper cones and crossovers that
are comprised of a single capacitor.

Let me know if you need to know any more. This is my second area of
expertise (behind CAD).

If the factory ones are Bose I'd stick with them.

for $500 i can get you the Pioneer DEH-P8000R FWIW...and that is Pioneers TOL
CD player, except for Premier. You can get some good Cerwin Vega (stealth
series) for the Dodge and I have been quite impressed with them.

Where can I get one of these soche dash kits? All the ones I've seen
look crappy and I'd rather pay a little more to get something that looks
good. Is there an on-line source?

Thanks,

Steve.

GOOD car stereo shops will stock them. That means a mom & pop shop, not one
where the installers "no habla ingles", and NOT best buy or circuit city.

I agree, the CV stealths are very nice, but a little tinny @ the crossover
point, which impedes with some female vocals...
