98 dodge cummins 2500, 4x4, cruise control gradually increases
anywhere from 7 to 12 miles per hour, real nice when towing a fifth
wheel, all the dealers say there is nothing wrong, what the hell is
the deal any chrysler people out there who dont have their heads up
their ass who can fix it?

I have this same truck (5 speed) I have had my servo replaced 2
times not. The last one seems to work better. Still has a problem
where you are set at say 45, and you speed up to 55 and hit set again.
then it will take off up to about 60 then slow back to 55.

The last 2 servos you would hit set at 50 and it would cruse at 57.
So far that problem seems to be gone.

Yes Dodge knows there's a problem. Because every 98 Cummins with a 5
speed does this! I bet it has something to do with the fact that in
98 they started using the ring gear to sense road speed, where before
there was a sender in the trans.

I had one cruise control problem, and it was fixed the first time at the
dealer. They replaced a servo

The 2nd new servo is now on order for my truck. This is a big problem for
the 98 and 99's. If your dealer will not fix it, take it to another one.

I hope its been fixed - my 99 5 spd Cummins doesn't seem to do this -
I looked for it but so far (only 450 miles) it seems to work like the
cruise on my 1995.

Mine was the same way off the lot. The problem did not crop up untill about
a month into owning the truck. It was intermittent then. Now it does it
all the time. My dealer in Decatur claims that a software fix was tried and
failed. They tell me that Chryco is now looking into a hardware fix. I
have tried the suggestions sent to me on re educating the thing with no
luck. I have over time, however, been trying different ways of setting the
cruise in hopes of re educating the unit. They have been holding the button
down for extended periods, varying speed while doing same, and pushing the
set button while still acellerating and releasing at the desired speed and
not taking my foot off of the throttle until the criuse pulls it away. It
does sometimes seem to work, yet at other times will still act crazy. I
have contemplated contacting the NHTSA to see if they are overseeing the
process of fixing the problem as it should be deemed a safety issue. My
unit does however, drop back to the original set speed after 5 to 10 minutes
of malfunctioning.

Hello, there. I am thinking about buying a cummins diesel 2500 ram and a friend
of mine has one. The cruise control problem can be fixed. according to the The
Diesel Register, you have to make it learn the setting. Here's the procedure in
the manual. If the vehicle operator Repeatedly presses and releases the set
button with their foot off of the accelerator(called a lift foot set) the
vehicle may accelerate and exceed the desired set speed by 5 mph and then
decelerate to less than the desired set speed before finally achieving the
desired set speed. The speed control has an adaptive strategy(ability to learn)
that compensates for vehicle to vehicle variations in speed control cable
lengths. When the speed control is set with the vehicle operators foot off of
the accelerator pedal, the speed control' thinks' there is excessive speed
control cable slack and adapts (learns). If ' lift foot sets' are continually
used, the speed control overshoot/undershoot condition will develop.
To'unlearn' the overshoot/undershoot condition, the vehicle operator has to
press and release the Set Button while "maintaining" the desired set speed with
the accelerator pedal(not decelerating nor accelerating), and then turn the
speed control switch to the off position(or press) the cancel button, if
equipped) after the speed control has been engaged for 10 seconds or longer.
This procedure must be performed approximately ten to fifteen times to
completely "unlearn" the overshoot/undershoot condition. I hope this does
the trick. I hope I can find a diesel ram for about $13000.00 and a 1995
model. Happiness always. Zste...@aol.com
