I recently purchased a 94 Dodge Ram. I didn't get an owners manual with
it, and I have pretty much figured out the important stuff, but there is
one little button on the bottom of the rear view mirror that lights up
when pushed. I have no idea what this is for. I just discovered it
while trying to flip the switch to get the lights from a driver behind
me out of my view. Is it some kind of light sensor or something? I
really feel dumb about this one. Anyone know?

It is the automatic dimmer when bright lights are behind you that when on it
will automatically dim the mirror so you don't have to deal with the glare.

This is an automatic mirror dimmer that works just great. It is active when
the button is lighted. I never even have to think about following driver's
lights with it active. You can see the sensor in the mirror silvering.

Hi Kris,
I happened to have my owners manual on my desk when I read your post so I
looked up your button to see what it is.
According to my 96 manual your mirror is an automatic dimming mirror. when
you push the button and it lights up that means that the auto dim feature is
on.
hope this helps,

If it is the same thing I have on my 98 Dakota, it is used to dim the glare
of headlights at night. When the button is lit, it activates 2 sensors. One
on back of the mirror and the other on the front. At night with someone's
headlights shining on the front of the mirror and the back sensor detects
little or no light, it causes the mirror to dim the reflection. This is used
instead of the old manual switch which would adjust the mirror up. What I'm
not sure of is how they dim the light. I suspect it works using a liquid
crystal display type technology.

I pressed that button on my truck and it didn't blow up. That's probably
because the button doesn't become active until the odometer hits 36k. I
guess I'll try it again later.

That is your automatic rear view dimming switch (when it's lit -green-
it's on). I had it on my '95 Intrepid and it worked great. I look
forward to having it again on my new Ram.....whenever it gets here!

I've got this on my Dakota. I leave mine turned off. My rear windows
are tinted enough that the dimming mirror isn't necessary.

The Little Button
What an invention. Just leave it on, it is only working when the headlight are
switched on.
