I'm new to this group and don't own a corvette yet. I made the mistake of
test driving a C5 when I knew I couldn't afford it. Now I want one real
bad.

But since I can't afford one, what I need to know is what are the real world
differences between different year models. How far back can I get a
convertible that handles and accelerates similar to a new C5?

I am under the impression that around the early 90's there was a HP gain in
the engine. Is that true. I also am under the impression that newer C4's
and C5's are similar in performance to early ZR1's. Is that true?

My requirements on any car are convertible, manual transmission, fuel
injection, electronic ignition, reliable. I will be looking only at low
mileage cars, LT 80K, so older low mileage vehicles will work. This will be
a daily driver so anything older than about 12 years old is probably not
going to work.

The C4 got its horsepower boost in 1992, with the LT1 engine (300hp.)
A '96 6-speed with the 330 hp LT4 engine (all manual transmission vettes had
the LT4 in 1996) will be right up there with the C5 and even approach a ZR1.
You won't be disappointed with an LT1 either. If you go before '92, the
engine used was an L98, which maxed out at 245hp in convertibles, but
they'll feel more powerful in the low RPM ranges than the newer vettes
because they have lots of low-end torque. Their power doesn't carry up
through the higher rpm's though like the 92 and later vettes do-- LT1 and
later vettes feel much faster on the highway.
Everything else (electronic ignition, fuel injection) are standard.
Test drive! See what you like!

William,

If I were in your shoes, I would strongly consider a 96 LT-4, or even LT-1
if money is really tight. The C5 is a nicer all around car in many ways,
but the C4 is still a great car and there are certainly pros and cons to
each of the designs.

Hey, WO:

Get a copy of the Corvette Black Book. Should be one available at a
bookstore near you on on the internet. Study up on the differences in
model years. Then, buy the newest Vette your budget allows.

Unfortunatly, the C4 convertible isn't in the same league as
the C5 covertible.

If you can't save your penneys for a 1998-200 C5 find any C4
convertible 1990-1996. They are all pretty much equaly reliable and
you can find the features you want in all of them.

As a daily driver a coupe might be a better idea. If the selection is
particularly sparse in your area, consider a new C5 hardtop. They are
not selling for as much as the other body styles.
