Chris,
Have you checked to see what DTCs are set? It might give you a hint what
is wrong. 98s did have the SDM, it contains much more functionality than
just storing the vehicle and SIR state at time of air bag deployment.
People are over reacting to this, it stores very little data compared to its
other functions.

Other than black tape on the dash to hide it, no. When my 99 had this it
turned out to be a fried SDM (this is the controversial "Flight Data
Recorder" module, not sure if 98's have it).
