Greetings,

Was wondering if any of the Corvette driver's here (USA) have had there car
up past 150 MPH. A gentleman at work was talking to me about how his new
Supra's 0-60 times (I think he said 4.3) are faster than my 98' C5 (who
knows if that's true), when he asked how fast I had driven the car. When I
told him I had it up to a little over 100 MPH - ONCE (hey it's only got
2000 miles on it - I don't want to beat it to a premature death :)), but
that supposedly it's capable of about 175, he told me that ALL U.S. cars
capable of going over 150 MPH are legally supposed to have speed limiters
to prevent going above 150. Doesn't quite seem right to me as all the mags
say they've had them to 173/175/178/etc... and I'm pretty sure the
Callaway's aren't limited to 150. Does anyone know if there's any truth to
this? If true, this seems like a waste of the car's capabilities.

Gregg

My friend, the guy who told you that his Supra TT does 0-60 in 4.3 is
talking out of his Ass if his car is stock. A stock Supra TT 6M does 0-60
in 5.0/5.1 and about him saying the C5 is governed at 150 that is a load of
the smelly stuff if you know what I mean. C5's can go well past 150 although
in the real world you'll probably never see it.

balls to go that fast yet.

Like a lot of things people say as fact this is bull. I've personally had mine
to slightly over 160 MPH. Now let me say that I didn't see the speedometer
myself because I was kind of busy at the time. I asked my passenger (a
trusting friend I might add) to call out the numbers in 5MPH increments. After
he said 160 MPH he said very calmly "you got to slow down".

I have a question for you C5 guys. Does the
C5 6 speed top speed happen in 5th or 6th?
I remember the 96 LT4 was at redline in 5th, but haven't heard anybody mention
this on C5.

Thanks,
Allan

I think the reason he thinks these cars have govenors is the Supra does have
one. Not sure why it has a govenor but reviews have mentioned that point.
Maybe the tires on the Supra can not handle the speed it is capable of.

I hope somebody corrects me if I'm wrong but I think top speed is in 5th or
6th. Before I bought my car I remeber seeing a table of rpm vs speed and both
the 5th and 6th gears were listed at 172-175mph (not sure which) with 5th gear
being close to 6K rpm. I know with my 160MPH+ experience I was trying to
catch up to another Vette and wanted the extra acceleration of the 5th gear,
wasn't near the redline.

Allan,

Definitely 5th (FIFTH) gear. The engine is turning too slowly in 6th
(SIXTH) to produce enough POWER to propell the C4 or C5 at top speed.

Had it all the way to 185 MPH (Speedo) there is no such thing on the Vette,
last I remebered there was a speed limiter on the 93+ Z28 if you would
purchase it without the performance package (Z rated wider tires). If that
was tha case Chevy would've seen my Vette back within 1 week....

I do not believe there is a speed govenor/limiter on the C5.

According to the formula:( I cannot remember where I got this)

mph= (rpm*td)/gr*rr*336.13524)
rpm= I used 5600 since this is peak HP
td= tire diameter in inches I measured 26 in. (rear tire)
gr= gear ratio in transmission 5th gear is 0.74:1, 6th is 0.50:1
rr = rear end ratio 6speed is 3.42

mph=(5600*26) / (0.74*3.42*336.13524) 145,660 / 850.691065392
mph= 171.22

This seems about right, I have had my C5 roadster up to about 140 mph 4600
rpm in 5th. The car was willing, but there was too much traffic to keep
going.

There is no truth to the man's assertions. U.S. cars are limited or not in
accordance with their tire ratings. The C-5 has Z-rated tires which are
capable of sustained speeds in excess of the car's 172 mph top, so they the
car is not limited.

However, the "Billy Bob", the fixed-roof coupe coming out in '99,is limited
to about 120, because it does not have Z-rated tires. The exception to this
is the Billy Bob with the Gymkhana package which includes Z-rated tires. On
that option there is no limit.

The FRC will not have a speed govenor and they all will have Z-rated tires. What
was the Gymkhana package is now standard equipment. You will only be able to get
them with a 6speed.--

I would select the following option for the FRC: RPO Z19

This includes the FE3 suspension (higher rate springs, larger sway bars,
more aggressive shocks) Magnasteer2 and the 17 inch front and 18 inch
rear wheel sizes (same as Coupe).

Sorry James, my mistake I misread/misquoted thinking you meant the
FE1 suspension in your post. I also beleive that I was mistaking you
for another poster who has been making posts that are filled with
misinformation or extremely old information. I take most all
information from said site with a very large grain of salt due to the
inaccuracies/omissions/contradictions I keep seeing there.

Sorry once again for the flame thrower attack...unlike some on this
newsgroup I'll admit when I'm in the wrong so please accept my
sincerest apology.
