A buddy of mine is building a ProStreet '63 split window from scratch. The
body is being built at a fibreglass shop in Kelowna B.C. and then the
chassis & running gear are being built for the body. Does anyone happen to
know how to go about getting it certified and licensed in Ontario? Does it
have to have a serial number? Does it have to be registered as a '63 or as a
pre-'75 to avoid all the subsequent pollution equipment requirements? I
checked out the Province of Ontario website for the Ministry of
Transportation (MTO) but could find any information on home/hand built cars.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. - Pat

That sounds new.

And so does that.

Sounds like it'll be registered as a '01.

Stephen, you are confirming my buddy's worst fears! He was hoping that since
it's based on a '63 model, that he could register it as a '63. What do guys
do that build Cobra Replicars? Are they registered as new cars? I hear that
Carroll Shelby got around this issue because he had some original chassis in
stock. Thanks Stephen. - Pat

What I have heard is that in a lot of the states, (I know you asked about
Ontario), is that they register them as whatever year car they are replicas of.
I never have done any of this, but have read some stuff on it.

I think that your buddy is doing it all wrong. You find out first about
what is required to get it on the road then put in the money. My
experience in Alberta is that when I started building my own tubular
controls/ball joint front suspension and dropped spindles for my 54
Pontiac, I went and talked to the guys who are going to certify the car.

In Alberta, if a vehicle has been unlicensed for over 7 years or so (not
too sure about the exact number of years) or never licensed in Alberta,
you must have an Out of Province inspection. This means that everything
must be 100% safe and amd any mods over-engineered from OEM. They check
on everything from seatbelts to emergency brakes to window glass. Now
for your buddy, contact some of the rod builders in Ontario, they've
done this before and most of them also inspect and certify vehicles.
They will be the ones who have the knowledge on what is really required.

BTW if it is the Bear Fiberglass 63 Split Window Corvette body that is a
Race body from Kelowna, He may have problems. It is advertised quite
clearly as a racing body for a reason. BTW it is a great looking body
but I think that the fiberglass may be too thin for street use.

Just checked the website out. Looks like they have added a street
version since I last looked. Great looking body still.

Eugene, you obviously know about Bear. It is Bear that's building the body
and my buddy's getting the Street Version. You're right, it does look sweet!
My Buddy's building a Chevy B.B. as we speak He assumed that he could
license it, since it's advertised as "Street", and he's hoping that he can
build a non-pollution mill. I'll e-mail Dave at Bear to see if he knows how
to license it here in Ontario. Thanks for your input. - Pat

Thanks for overlooking my second post. I kind of shot off my mouth
before looking to see if Bear updated their website. I had looked at
their Corvette body about a year ago with a similar idea about a street
version and they only had the race. I hope your buddy puts up a website
about it. I would love to see the finished product.

Hi Eugene! I found an Association here in Ontario that seems to know a lot
about "kit-cars" registration and licensing. They're called "Specialty
Vehicle Association of Ontario and they seem to be well versed in provincial
laws pertaining to vehicles. Apparently, the only thing my buddy needs to be
concerned about is a vented gas-cap! Can you believe it? I'll attach a link
to their website for information purposes. - Pat

Even if it is a "new" vehicle, we have a clause for "hot rods". Still has to
meet some requirements, but they are far from 01 specs.
I'll forward this post to a friend who has a home built wooden car. He should be
able to tell you
Bruce
