What about some R12 drop in replacement. I've been getting publicity materials
on the stuff from various makers. Seems to be EPA sanctioned.

I'm new to the group and can offer some R-12 info. I am in refrigeration
business sales. R-12 is a CFC (Cloroflourocarbon) and is a strictly
controlled refrigerant. At least it is here in NY and I believe in the rest of
the US as well. Unfortunately it is only legal to purchase R-12 from a
liscenced dealer. If anyone wants to sell you some it is 'technically'
illegal. I remember being able to buy R-12 when I was a kid back in the 70's
for $3.00 a can. Now it is very pricey. A dealer will charge you over $100.00
for the same amount, maybe more. So, if someone has some to offer you and the
government doesn't know...I leave the rest to your capable imagination.
If someone suggests that you use the newest refrigerant, R-143A, which is
an HFC ( hydroflourocarbon), for you car, DO NOT use it. Unless you have a
properly designed A/C unit, it will not work. This is why they had to redesign
all the refrigerators a couple of years ago.
If I can offer any advice please let me know.

Any R12 auto system can be redone.....just change the 'o' rings seals out for the
blue/green ones made out of Viton rubber and add PAG oil after draining out the
original oil......and recharge with about 2 lbs of R134....that is
it......dun....works like a charm.....just check for leakes first to be sure you
don't hve a bad comppresser seal or hose.....GENE
