I have a 1998 C5 (Nassau Blue which I love). Most of the time (but not
always) when I depress the brake pedal I feel a squeaking / creaking (or a
slight vibration) from the pedal. I'm pretty sure that the squeak / creak
is from the pedal and not actually from the brakes themselves. This
happens both when I'm driving and when the car is in park. Sometimes
(rarely) the brake pedal operates as smooth as silk. The problem does not
seem to affect the braking performance of the car. Has anyone else had a
similar experience? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

My 98 has a creaking sound too, but it is coming from the rear calipers
and does it with the motor running or not. I showed the dealer this
3 times (depress brake pedal, press about 1/8 inch more - let up 1/8"
more ...etc, and the creak sound occurs.
1st said it was "normal", so I tried it in another vette on the lot --
"hey, imagine that, this one doesn't do it"
Then the tech couldn't duplicate, showed them again.... well, you know
the rest.

Since then, now I get a random "low coolant" alerts....here we go again.
(actually got the 1st one driving off the freakin lot!)
Fix it yourself, or live with it.
Avoid the dealer at all costs, you'll have less problems.

I feel a slight vibration when pressing the pedal lightly. It doesn't make
any noise but it just feels funny. I have tried other C5's and noticed the
same thing. I think it's normal for the C5. Anyone else notice this?

I have the vibration but it is also evident in the braking of the car - as
if the rotors were slightly warped causing it to feel as if ABS were coming
on and off quickly(which it is not).
I just got my car back from the dealer - for the third time and they can't
fix anything.... I am thinking lemon law... I have problems with the
suspension and the steering.

I keep seeing this bitch about the dealers. If they are really that
bad then maybe it's time to send letters and emails to GM. I have
always found import dealers to be much better at servicing the
customer. If we all let GM know that the dealer service sucks and
stop buying their cars maybe they will get a clue (read futile).

I think that the "vibration" is the same thing that I feel. I stuck my head
into the area where the brake pedal connects to the other various parts and
actualy think that I may have found where the "vibration" is coming from.
There is some sort of tight rubber fitting with foam rubber inside that may
be causing the "vibration". I have tried to lubricate it (with some
success), but it is very difficult to get access to the right area. When I
get some more time I will try to do a better job of lubrication.

No vibration what so ever in my C5 in either light or heavy braking.

The noise/vibration feels like a brake booster-air bellows releasing air.
Listen to it carefully. it does not seem to hurt anything, its probably a
by-product of a dust seal or something, but it can be annoying

I have a very annoying squeak when I apply the brakes. Sitting still in the
garage,
I can pump the brakes and hear it with each press of the brake pedal....

Any ideas?

If it bothers you so much, don't use the brake pedal.

Just the thing that service departments should be able to fix<smile>
When you pay good $$$$ for a Corvette this should be an easy fix.
Good luck!

The only way we are going to clean-up the dealers is to file a
complaint with GM! In my experience, chevy dealers suck especially
when it comes to 'Vettes. Actually the 'Vette should be sold by a
more upscale dealer. Bitching on this NG is not enough. If enough
people filed a complaint about the dealer service, GM maybe would do
something. I went through this process with FOMOCO to fix my local
Ford dealer. They sent a company investigator from detroit and damned
near closed the dealer down. Now they are the best Ford dealer in
town.

Sorry to hear about your problems with Criswell. Looks like things have
not changed at Criswell since I lived there in the '80s. They gave me a
bad high speed vibration on my '83 Citation X11 - blamed it on my
non-stock +2 wheel/tire combo. Never could fix it. The sales people
were as bad as the service dept. In '86 I was looking at used Corvettes
there, but after copious amounts of BS from them, ended up with a new
SVO Mustang from Klein Ford instead (don't get upset, it's for sale now
and my Torch/Oak/6sp C5 is scheduled to be built the week of 10/26).
Not all dealers suck. I've had really good luck with Jack Cauley in W.
Bloomfiedl, MI. I leased my '95 (Yellow/grey LT1) there and was treated
very well. They will keep my business as long as the sales/service
quality remains high.

I've got the same noise on my '98 convertible. The creaking noise appears
to come from the pedal, but in fact it's movement between the caliper and
brake pad. Get someone to apply the brakes while you listen to the front
brakes. On my car the front left caliper creaks badly, but I cannot feel
any untoward movement. I'm going to put some Copper Ease (brake grease) on
the back of the pads to see if it helps. I'll let you know if it works.
