i heard on the radio this morning that a 1981 corvette that was stolen in
1980 from a dealer ship was found recently stored in garage, in absolute
mint condition with only 56km on it, and is going to be auctioned off...any
idea what something like this would go for?

About $20,000 - $25,000 I would say. Corvette Mike had an 81 about a
year ago with about 300 miles on it, it seems and it went for around
$20,000.

Gee, I paid $19K for mine back then.
Do you think it's worth $20K now, 20 years and 296,500 miles later?

Test drove an 81 last week in fairly good shape, 68,000 miles showing if I
remember right, the guy was asking $8998.

I read the message to say that the 81 only had 56 kilometers on it,
somewhere around 52 miles? I am not good with metrics!

It's actually 35 miles. To go from miles to kilometers, multiply by
1.6. To go from kilometers to miles, divide by 1.6.

18 years later, stolen 'Vette one hot car

Rescued from thief's garage, vehicle will aid sick kids

Tue, Oct 24, 2000

By Paul McKie

WINNIPEG police find stolen cars all the time. But finding a silver
Corvette in near-mint condition 18 years after it was stolen is enough
to get anyone's engine humming.

"We don't see a lot of these," said Sgt. Randy Harris, as he looked over
the sleek 1981 'Vette -- with only 56 kilometres on the odometer -- on
display yesterday in the Delta Hotel lobby.

The car, now valued at $35,000, is being raffled off for the Children's
Wish Foundation and another charity. The foundation has printed 999
tickets for sale for $99.99. The draw is Dec. 1.

The police sometimes find vehicles that have been missing for some time.
But they're often beaten, battered and written off.

Not this one.

"It's brand new," said Harris, who heads up the Winnipeg Police Services
stolen vehicle unit.

The Corvette was certainly new in '81 when it arrived on the lot of
Terry Balkan Chev Olds, which is now out of business. The car was
stolen off the lot shortly after delivery.

Fast-forward to summer 1999, when Const. Rich Lowen received a tip about
the car. On Oct. 25, 1999, Lowen executed a search warrant on a north
end residential garage. Inside was the vehicle with barely a mark on it.

Lowen said the accused was too afraid to drive the vehicle, but wouldn't
give it up either. The keeper of the Corvette was even too afraid to
push it out on to the driveway, said Lowen.

The man was convicted of possession of stolen property but served no
jail time.

MPI works closely with the Stolen Vehicle Unit and was notified
immediately of the find. MPI's Brian Smiley said they quickly determined
the claim was with another insurance company.

But American Home said since the claim was paid out so long ago, the
police could keep the vehicle. Lowen said they decided to donate it to
Children's Wish, which grants wishes to children suffering from a
life-threatening illness.

American Home asked that half the proceeds raised in the raffle be
donated to the Michael Mutcheson Memorial Fund, which provides
educational scholarships to needy Manitoba children. Mutcheson was a
Morden claims adjuster who was killed in a motor vehicle accident.

The Corvette was in excellent condition, but looked like it hadn't been
moved in 18 years, said Smiley.

MPI spruced up the car, did some minor body and mechanical work and
slapped new tires on the sports car. Even under the hotel lobby's
subdued lighting, the Corvette gleamed.

Maria Toscano, provincial director of Children's Wish, said she expected
all the tickets to be snapped up immediately for such a rare find.
