As best I can remember, '49 - '53 Ford V8's were painted metalic copper.

The car engines definitely were copper colored. But I think the truck
engines were a different hue. This question has come up before, but I
can't remember the answer for trucks. Try dejavu.com, and you'll
probably find it.

ARGHHH! I meant, of course, dejaNEWS.com. Or did I correct myself
before?

I have been asked to post the information I have on the paint colors used on
early Ford flathead V-8 engines, used in Ford vehicles from 1932 to 1953 in
various versions. I won't pretend to be an expert on this - my sources are a
paint advertisement and an advice column in "The V-8 Times", published by the
Early Ford V-8 Club of America. Interestingly, the information from the
technical advisor in the column conflicts with one of the listings in the
advertisement. Just goes to show you gotta be careful in your research!
From an advertisement for engine paints available from Bill Hirsch Automotive,
Newark, NJ:
Dark Green: for all V-8 truck engines 1932-1940 and all V-8 car engines
1932-1941
Dark Blue: for all V-8 truck engines 1941-1948 and all V-8 car engines 1942-1948
Bronze: for all 1949-51 flathead V-8s, most 1951-1953 V-8s (Ford started making
some overhead-valve engines prior to 1954)
Orange: for some 1951-1953 V-8s
Black: for accessories
The ad doesn't say how to figure out which 51-53s should be bronze and which
should be orange. Might have had to do with which plant built the engine.
By accessories, I think it means starter, generator, breather cap and tube, and
draft tube. At least that's the way the ones on my '53 p/u are painted.
>From the technical advice column regarding correct color for a 1951 Ford pickup
engine, the advisor says it should be dark red. Sometime after 1951 it changed
to light green. There is mention of dark red on 1948-1950 engines, and light
green on 1953.
Note that neither the dark red nor the light green are listed in the
advertisement! The engine in my '53 was painted bronze, but there is a high
probability it was a replacement out of a passenger car as evidenced by some
other minor difference that wouldn't show up in a 1/24 scale model unless you're
into precisely modeling the width of fan belts!

I popped the hood on my unrestored 1950 F-6 and under the grime and grit we
have red paint. My firm belief is that this is the engine that came with the
truck. All parts are original and with 78,xxx original miles I doubt if
another engine was put in.

I have received a lot of answers to my question about my engine. Here's a
great place to look for engine colors.
