The ZL-1 Camaro was manufactured by Chevrolet with an aluminum 427
engine that generated an obscene amount of horsepower. The ZL-1 engine
was factory rated at 430 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 450 foot pounds of
torque at 4,400 rpm. At 7,000 rpm, it generated approximately 575
horsepower and with the installation of a set of headers, over 600
horsepower could easily be had. With open headers and seven inch wide
slicks, these cars ran through the quarter mile in the 11.60's at 125 mph
plus. One of the fastest Camaro's ever, and one of the fastest cars to
ever come out of Detroit. Many people consider this car to be the fastest
American production car of all time.
This car came with no special exterior identification. They all had the
functional cowl induction hood, as well as front and rear spoilers. All
ZL-1 cars except three, had standard black interiors. All came with 15"
tires and rallye wheels, heavy duty curved neck Harrison radiators,
transistorized ignition system, special suspension with 5 leaf rear
springs, heavy duty shocks and heavy duty sway bars, heavy duty
positraction 12 bolt axles with 4:10 gears, power front disc brakes, and
transmission choices were the Muncie M-21 close ratio 4-speed, Muncie M-22
heavy duty "Rock Crusher" 4-speed or the Turbo Hydramatic 400 automatic
transmission. These cars should also all have 140 mph speedometers.
All 1969 ZL-1 Camaro's were manufactured under C.O.P.O. 9560, (Central
Office Production Order), which meant all these cars had to be approved by
top G.M. executives.
The ZL-1 option added a staggering $4,160.00 to the base price of a 1969
Camaro, which was $2,727.00 for the base V-8 sport coupe. One expensive
option.
Enjoy.

I get my Info fro Vince Emmy, every heard of him? He is also the person
that told me about the secound set of numbers on a COPO camaro, which
are in the trunk on the 1/4's and If I remember correctly is 4 numbers.
I have alot of this info in a huge box that I put up in to storage.
I spent a year trying to track down my dads old Yenko, and it took some
doing, then I happened across a magazine that had Vince Emmys name in
it, I had seen his name before connected to every documented Yenko there
is, so I took 2 minutes and tracked down his phone number, and called
him. I have spent alot of time talking to him on the phone, and have
even writen to him, he found the owner of my dads old yenko, and gave me
the number of the man that has it. It turns out that my dads Yenko is
one of the 18 or so 69 Yenko Camaros that Mr. Cliff Ernst owns, one of 5
Daytona Yellow ones.
My spelling might not be good, but my info is.
Charlie
Yenko did Get 50 ZL-1 Camaros, this is a fact, not a myth.
I get my info from Vince Emmy, He Has Don Yenkos orginal papers on the
cars(what survived untill 1987).
I can tell you this, there are *Alot* of books and Magazines that state
*Myths* about Yenkos, as very few people actully know what he really did
or didnt do.
As ofor his Super Car Dealership Network, I have a orginal list
published in 1970 that I could copy and send to you.
Charlie
Greg
Nice how you insult my spelling, and my Knoweldge of Yenkos.
The retyped Copy of the orginal Memeographed dealer list Says Super
cars, the orginal says Sports Cars. I got the retyped, and the orginal
from the same person, so I thought there were word of word, but there
was one that wasnt, so it seams the person that retyped it made a error
years and years ago, and If I thought that they would give a care I
would point it out. What makes you think your a Expert on Camaros? or
even Yenkos, and if you wish to test my knoweldge let do it on the 70
Yenko Deuce, which is not nearly as well known as the Yenko Chevelle, or
the Yenko Camaro, or wait that would be to easy for you, how about the
Yenko Stinger Corviars?

Greg,
Don't worry, you are not hearing any kind of new secret information
that is
contrary to the, "myths" spread about these vehicles. There are no,
"second numbers" on either the ZL-1 aluminum 427 C.O.P.O. 9560, or the
cast iron L-72 427 C.O.P.O. 9561 cars. I have owned three C.O.P.O. 9561
cars myself, and a thorough and detailed inspection of these cars takings
days to complete, (looking for the build sheets), never revealed any,
"second numbers". Further, several discussions over the years via
telephone with Vince Emme, confirm this to be the case.
Vince Emme is the fine gentleman who has in his possession the original
Yenko Chevrolet dealer record books for all the Yenko cars ever sold,
right down to the VIN numbers, colors, options on the cars, the selling
price, and of course, the number of a given car model that were sold.
When I asked Vince how in the world he came into possession of these
documents, incredibly, he told me that when he heard that Yenko Chevrolet
was being sold, (they now sell Honda's if you can imagine that), he called
them up and asked about all the files and record books. Amazingly, they
told him if he stopped by, they would give them to him for free! Talk
about being in the right place at the right time. Those record books are
now in a safe deposit box in a bank vault of course.
Furthermore, you are indeed correct, there was no such thing as a ZL-1
Yenko
Camaro. Checking the ZL-1 Camaro VIN number I.D. list confirms this. No
ZL-1
Camaro's were ever shipped from Chevrolet to Yenko Chevrolet, located in
Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania, just outside of Pittsburgh. Vince Emme can
confirm this as well.
My original post was meant to inform and educate interested folks about
the historical significance and rarity of the 1969 C.O.P.O. ZL-1 Camaro's.
Someone has taken it upon themselves, (they will remain nameless here),
to attempt to denigrate this, saying that this information is, "common
knowledge". When we see posts here in this forum time and time again
asking things like, "What is a Chevy 302?", or questions asked like, "Did
Chevrolet make the 454 available in the Camaro?", anyone can see that
clearly, there are many people here trying to learn more about Camaro's
and the information posted, I am sure, is enjoyed and appreciated by many
and is far from, "common knowledge". Indeed, the lack of knowledge they
themselves have displayed on this topic only confirms that this
information is not, "common".
I have spent over twenty years researching the C.O.P.O. 9560 and 9561
Camaro's. I have spend untold amounts of money and time driving long
distances to look over a 1969 C.O.P.O. Camaro. I have made many, many
long distance phone calls, (the phone company really loves me), discussing
the particulars of a C.O.P.O. Camaro with its owner. I have travelled
many miles to personally inspect 1969 C.O.P.O. Camaro's at car shows. I
have logged long and tedious hours and hours of research in libraries
doing research of old newspapers that are now on microfilm, and the
automobile advertisements that appeared in them. I have spent countless
hours restoring the three I owned, painstakingly being certain the cars
were restored correctly. Of interesting note, I discovered that Chevrolet
did indeed mark the C.O.P.O. Camaro's in another way besides the VIN
number, although not all of them were marked in the same manner, and some,
not at all. On some of the 1969 C.O.P.O. Camaro's, on various places on
the car, the factory assembly line workers used a white crayon to write,
"COPO" on various places of the car. On my cars, it was on the underside
of the transmission crossmember. In my conversations with other C.O.P.O.
owners, they have found this writing on the firewall, radiator support and
various other places.
For someone to come along and make the claim that there were 50 1969
ZL-1 Yenko Camaro's, and that all the C.O.P.O. Camaro's had an additional,
"second" set of numbers differing from the VIN number, and state it as
fact, (going so far as to misquote someone who does have the correct
information), is flat-out wrong. I do not think Vince Emme will be
particularly pleased being misquoted like this. It is also a disservice
to anyone here who is trying to learn more about Camaro's and the C.O.P.O.
Camaro's in particular.
Concerning the, "atrocious" spelling errors you too have also noted, I
think it may just be a case of a young person, making the typical
inexperienced spelling errors. Might be best to take it for what it's
worth. Obviously, such atrocious spelling would not come from an adult
who has spent a lot of time doing research reading books, learning a
subject, and absorbing the correct spelling of words into their mind, i.e
learning. Typo's are one thing, but as you noted, spelling errors that
bad are quite another.
Maybe it is possible that anything they read where the spelling is
actually correct, may indeed appear like a, "magazine article" to them.
Although I do thank them for the compliment, as over the years, I have
indeed written several articles on the topic of the 1969 C.O.P.O.
Camaro's.
Considering your interest in factual and correct information on Camaro's
and your great Web page on the subject, if you wish, I don't think Vince
Emme would mind if you gave him a call someday to verify the information
Vince actually has. If you would like to do that, just e-mail me and I
will send it to you.
Tacked onto the end of this post, I will re-post the 1969 ZL-1 Camaro
VIN number I.D. list again. Please note, none of these cars were shipped
to Yenko Chevrolet in Cannonsburg, P.A. The 1969 ZL-1 Camaro VIN number
I.D. list itself is from Mr.Vince Piggins at Chevrolet Product Promotion
Engineering.
Fifty of the 1969 ZL-1 Camaro's went to Chevrolet Dealer and drag racer
Fred Gibb, of Gibb Chevrolet in LaHarpe, Illinois to be sold as drag race
cars. Nineteen others were sold to various other Chevrolet dealerships
around the country. Again, please note, absolutely none were shipped to
Yenko Chevrolet in Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania.
What I find of particular interest about this list is car number
fourteen and car number twenty. These were shipped to a gentleman named
Ammon R. Smith in York, Pennsylvania. With every other car on the list,
the car was shipped to a Chevrolet car dealer, but no mention of Ammon R.
Smith being a Chevrolet car dealer is made. I have never seen this
subject addressed. Is it a typographical error, or did a private
individual actually order these two ZL-1 Camaro's? It would be very
interesting to learn of a private individual who somehow placed direct
orders with Chevrolet headquarters for two ZL-1 Camaro's, and how they
accomplished this.

So my spelling is bad, but your attitude sucks, your a know it all type,
and will never admit to your errors, You deam it fit to degrade others
and publish out and out lies. As for me being a Adult? Im 22 years old,
so yes I am physically. Mental adulthood isnt something thats marked by
spelling abilities, and neither is knowledge of cars. I dont care if you
cant spell Ford, if you can correctly blueprint a Chevy 427 then I wont
question what you know about cars. It shows how mature you are to attack
me personally as such. Also, I would just like to let you know that the
